HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 Drives
Genuine HPE hot-plug drives for the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. This chassis is small form factor only — every bay is a 2.5-inch hot-plug bay, eight as standard, sixteen on Performance models and up to 24 with both optional cages — and there is no large form factor front end for it.
DL560 Gen9 Drive Specifications
- Form factor: 2.5-inch SFF hot-plug SAS or SATA only, in HPE Gen9 SmartDrive carriers with status, activity and do-not-remove indicators
- Bays: eight on Entry and Base models, sixteen on Performance, upgradeable to 24 through the Bay 1 and Bay 2 cage and backplane kits
- Media bay trade: a Universal Media Bay occupies an eight-bay cage position, capping the server at 18 drives rather than 24
- Maximum internal capacity: 48TB on 24 x 2TB SFF SAS or SATA hard drives, or 92TB on 24 x 3.84TB SFF solid state drives
- Interface: 12G SAS and 6G SATA, on the embedded Dynamic Smart Array B140i — SATA only, ten drives — or a Smart Array or Smart Host Bus Adapter card
- M.2: 2280 SATA modules mount in a PCIe slot rather than a drive bay, and run on the B140i only
This chassis is small form factor only. Every bay is a 2.5-inch hot-plug bay — eight as standard, sixteen on Performance models, 24 with both optional cages, or 18 once a Universal Media Bay takes a cage position. There is no large form factor front end for the DL560 Gen9, and no carrier converts one.
Which drive class does the workload want?
| Class | Interface | Capacities listed | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise 15K hard drive | 12G SAS | 300GB to 900GB | Transactional databases wanting spindles, not terabytes |
| Enterprise 10K hard drive | 12G SAS | 300GB to 2.4TB | General virtualisation, the usual default on this platform |
| Midline 7.2K hard drive | 12G SAS or 6G SATA | 1TB to 2TB | Bulk and archival capacity per pound |
| Solid state drive | 12G SAS or 6G SATA | 240GB to 7.68TB | Latency-sensitive tiers, boot and cache roles |
Four sockets of compute behind 24 bays changes what a bay is worth. On a two-socket 2U the argument is usually capacity against spindle count; here the processors outrun the storage long before the bays run out, which pushes the answer toward solid state for anything latency-bound and toward the largest midline drives for anything simply being stored. Either way, HPE notes that drive, controller, firmware and backplane negotiate to a common transfer rate, so a 12G drive behind a 6G path runs at the slower one.
Choosing the Right DL560 Gen9 Drive
- A 3.5-inch drive has nowhere to go in this server. There is no LFF cage for this chassis and no carrier converts a bay, so form factor is not a decision you can defer.
- Count the cages, not the front panel. Entry and Base models ship one eight-bay cage; the second and third are separate kits, and a Universal Media Bay takes one position.
- SAS needs a controller card. The embedded B140i is SATA only and addresses ten drives at most, so a SAS array or anything past ten spindles means a card.
- Pick the SSD endurance grade by write load. Read Intensive suits mostly-read tiers, Mixed Use general virtualisation and Write Intensive heavy sustained writes; the listing carries all three in SAS and SATA.
- Keep an array on one sector format. Several families here are 512e parts, and an array is easier to reason about when every member reports the same format.

DL560 Gen9 Drives FAQ
How many drives does a DL560 Gen9 hold?
Eight hot-plug 2.5-inch drives on Entry and Base models and sixteen on Performance, upgradeable to a maximum of 24. A Universal Media Bay kit reduces that maximum to 18.
Does the DL560 Gen9 take 3.5-inch drives?
No. Every bay in this chassis is a 2.5-inch small form factor hot-plug bay and HPE does not offer a large form factor drive cage for it.
What is the maximum storage capacity of a DL560 Gen9?
48TB internally using 24 x 2TB SFF SAS or SATA hard drives, or 92TB using 24 x 3.84TB SFF solid state drives.
Can the embedded controller run SAS drives?
No. The Dynamic Smart Array B140i is a SATA-only controller and addresses up to ten drives. A SAS array needs a Smart Array controller or a Smart Host Bus Adapter.
Do I need HPE drive carriers?
Yes. Drives fit this server in HPE Gen9 SmartDrive carriers, which provide the status and do-not-remove indicators. The carrier is part of the drive assembly.
Where do M.2 drives go in a DL560 Gen9?
Into a PCIe slot rather than a drive bay, on a carrier kit. HPE documents M.2 drives on this server as running on the B140i SATA controller only.
