HPE ProLiant DL380 G6 Power Supplies
Genuine HPE Common Slot hot-plug power supplies for the HPE ProLiant DL380 G6, new and refurbished. One rule governs every order on this page: HPE does not support mixing power supplies in the same server — every unit must be the same type, or the server reports errors and operation fails.
DL380 G6 Power Supply Specifications
- Format: HPE Common Slot (CS) hot-plug supplies, the form factor shared across several ProLiant generations
- Outputs stocked: 460W, 750W and 1200W AC, so the supply can be sized to the configuration rather than over-specified
- Input range: 100 to 240V at 50/60Hz on the AC units; the 460W and 750W deliver their full rating across that whole range
- High line requirement: the 1200W AC supply delivers 800W at 100V and 900W at 120V, and only reaches 1200W at 200V and above
- DC option: a 1200W Common Slot −48VDC unit for racks fed by DC rectifiers, taking 36 to 72V input and supplied with a −48V DC cord
- Redundancy and cooling: optional 1+1 or N+N redundancy through option kits, with fully redundant hot-plug fans shipped N+1
The 1200W supply is only a 1200W supply on high line. HPE rates it at 800W on a 100V feed and 900W on 120V, reaching its full output at 200V and above. Mixing is not supported either, so every unit in the server must be the same type — check the rack voltage and the label on the installed supply before ordering.
Which wattage does your configuration need?
| Output | Full rated output needs | Efficiency at 200–240V | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 460W | Any input from 100V | 91 to 91.5% | Single processor, modest drive count, no add-in accelerators |
| 750W | Any input from 100V | 91 to 91.5% | Two processors with a populated SFF cage — the common choice |
| 1200W AC | 200V or above | 89% | Two processors, sixteen drives and several PCIe cards |
| 1200W −48VDC | 36 to 72V DC feed | 89% at 48V | Racks fed by DC rectifiers rather than an AC PDU |
The row that catches people out is the 1200W AC unit, which is a 900W supply on a 120V feed and only a 1200W supply on high line. Oversizing costs efficiency as well as money, since a supply running far below its rating sits away from its best efficiency point. HPE publishes a Power Advisor for sizing a configuration, and the honest shortcut is to match what is already fitted unless the machine has gained processors or drives since.
Choosing the Right DL380 G6 Power Supply
- Read the label on the installed unit first. Matching is a requirement, not a preference, so the existing supply is the specification.
- Same type means same type. HPE lists the valid states as all 460W, all 750W, all 1200W of one efficiency class, or all −48VDC; two 1200W units of different classes are still a mismatch.
- Check the rack feed before ordering 1200W. On a 120V circuit that supply gives 900W, so a 750W unit may be the better buy unless the rack runs at 200V or more.
- Redundancy needs two matching units. A 1+1 configuration is two identical supplies; a single supply in a two-bay chassis is not redundant, whatever its rating.
- Option kits include the cords. The AC kits ship with an IEC power cable and PDU IEC cables, the DC unit with a −48V DC cord.

DL380 G6 Power Supplies FAQ
Can I mix power supplies in a DL380 G6?
No. HPE states that all power supplies in one server must be of the same type - all 460W, all 750W, all 1200W of one efficiency class, or all minus 48V DC. Mismatched units produce errors and operation fails.
What wattage power supply does a DL380 G6 need?
It depends on the configuration. 460W suits a lightly loaded single-processor server, 750W covers most two-processor builds with a full SFF cage, and 1200W is for heavily populated machines.
Does the 1200W supply really give 1200W?
Only on a 200V or higher feed. On 100V it is rated at 800W and on 120V at 900W, so a 120V rack does not get the full output.
Are DL380 G6 power supplies hot-plug?
Yes. The Common Slot supplies are hot-plug and redundant, and in a matched pair one can be replaced while the server continues to run.
What is the minus 48VDC power supply for?
Racks fed by DC power rectifiers rather than an AC supply, as found in some telecommunications environments. It takes a 36 to 72V DC input, ships with a minus 48V DC cord, and is not interchangeable with the AC units.
How many fans does a DL380 G6 have?
Fully redundant hot-plug fans ship as standard in an N+1 arrangement: four fans on single-processor models, and six on models with a second processor fitted.
