Check what you already have before buying a card. A good number of DL380 G6 upgrades turn out not to need a card at all. The four embedded ports carry a TCP/IP Offload Engine and Accelerated iSCSI already, so where the requirement is storage traffic rather than raw bandwidth the server is very likely equipped for it. Buy a card when the need is 10 Gigabit, fibre, or more than four ports.
Choosing the Right DL380 G6 Network Adapter
- Count the slots and check the riser. Six PCIe Gen2 slots assumes the optional secondary riser is fitted, and HPE notes that the two-slot x8 riser supports one 10GbE NIC.
- Budget the memory for 10GbE. HPE calls for at least 2GB of server memory per 10 Gigabit adapter, and supports no more than two of them per server.
- Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
- Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without the right optics in between.
