HPE ProLiant DL340e Gen12 Memory

HPE ProLiant DL340e Gen12 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR5 Smart Memory for the HPE ProLiant DL340e Gen12, new and refurbished. This is a single-socket server with 16 DIMM slots on 8 channels, and the rule that decides every upgrade is the one HPE prints on the speed line: DDR5-6400 with one DIMM per channel, 5200 MT/s the moment a second DIMM joins any channel.

DL340e Gen12 Memory Specifications

  • Type: HPE DDR5 Smart Memory, Registered (RDIMM); every kit listed is DDR5-6400 CAS-52-52-52 EC8, and HPE states its documented performance requires HPE Smart Memory
  • Slots: 16 DIMM slots, 8 channels, 2 DIMMs per channel, all served by the one processor
  • Kits listed: 16GB single-rank x8, 32GB dual-rank x8, and 64GB, 96GB and 128GB dual-rank x4
  • Maximum capacity: 2TB as 16 × 128GB; HPE notes that every listed processor supports 2TB
  • Speed: 6400 MT/s at 1 DIMM per channel, 5200 MT/s at 2, and never above the processor's own rating — the 6710E, 6731E and 6746E are 5600 MT/s parts
  • Protection: Advanced ECC, Adaptive Double DRAM Device Correction (on by default) and memory mirroring
  • Ordering: -B21 kits are the stand-alone memory SKUs; the -F21 twins are for factory-integrated configurations only

Eight modules keep the speed; sixteen cost you a grade. With one DIMM in each of the eight channels the DL340e Gen12 runs DDR5-6400; the moment a second DIMM joins any channel every module drops to 5200 MT/s, and the 2TB maximum is a 5200 MT/s configuration by definition. Fill slots 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14 and 16 first.

How much memory can the DL340e Gen12 hold?

ConfigurationTotalSpeed, 6400 MT/s processor
8 × 32GB, one per channel256GB6400 MT/s
8 × 64GB, one per channel512GB6400 MT/s
8 × 128GB, one per channel1TB6400 MT/s
16 × 64GB, two per channel1TB5200 MT/s
16 × 128GB, two per channel (HPE maximum)2TB5200 MT/s

The table shows the trade the platform forces. 1TB is reachable two ways — eight 128GB modules at full speed, or sixteen 64GB modules a grade slower — and the eight-module route leaves eight slots open for a later top-up. Only the last row needs every slot, and it is the only way to 2TB. On a storage server the memory is largely cache and metadata, so many builds stop at eight modules and keep the 6400 MT/s.

Choosing the Right DL340e Gen12 Memory

  • Follow HPE's population order, not the slot numbers. One DIMM goes in slot 10, two in 7 and 10, four in 3, 7, 10 and 14, eight in 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14 and 16 — one per channel, holding 6400 MT/s. Performance-core processors add a 12-DIMM step before the full 16.
  • Match the processor's own speed. The 6710E, 6731E and 6746E run memory at 5600 MT/s, so the same kit is slower in those systems whatever the population.
  • Buy in HPE's quantities. The documented steps are 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 DIMMs; every kit here is a single module, so eight slots is eight kits.
  • x4 and x8 can share a channel. HPE allows x4 and x8 RDIMMs in the same channel; all modules must be DDR5, and DIMMs go in only after the processor is installed.
  • Refurbished is the same part. A refurbished kit carries the same HPE part number, is tested before it ships, and is the practical way to fill eight or sixteen slots in one order.

DL340e Gen12 Memory FAQ

How much RAM does the DL340e Gen12 support?
2TB, as sixteen 128GB DDR5 RDIMMs. HPE states every listed processor supports the full 2TB. Because that fills both DIMMs in every channel, the 2TB configuration runs at 5200 MT/s rather than 6400.

What type of memory does the DL340e Gen12 use?
HPE DDR5 Smart Memory Registered DIMMs (RDIMM). The kits HPE lists are all DDR5-6400 CAS-52-52-52 EC8 in 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 96GB and 128GB, and HPE states that HPE Smart Memory is required to reach the documented performance.

How many memory slots does the DL340e Gen12 have?
Sixteen, arranged as 8 channels with 2 DIMMs per channel, all on the single processor. One DIMM per channel means eight modules; two per channel means all sixteen.

Why is my DL340e Gen12 memory running at 5200 instead of 6400?
Either the population or the processor. HPE rates the platform at 6400 MT/s with one DIMM per channel and 5200 MT/s with two, so any channel holding two modules drops the whole system. Separately, the 6710E, 6731E and 6746E processors are 5600 MT/s parts and will never reach 6400.

Do I have to install DL340e Gen12 memory in a particular order?
Yes. HPE's population order is slot 10 for one DIMM, slots 7 and 10 for two, slots 3, 7, 10 and 14 for four, and slots 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14 and 16 for eight, which is one module per channel. Install DIMMs only after the processor is fitted.

What is the difference between the -B21 and -F21 memory part numbers?
The -B21 kits are the stand-alone memory SKUs you order to add to a server. HPE states each -B21 has a corresponding -F21 SKU used only when configuring a new server with factory-integrated DIMMs. For an upgrade you want the -B21.
