HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 Memory

Upgrade your HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 with genuine HPE DDR5 Smart Memory, new and refurbished and tested before shipping. One processor feeds all 16 DIMM slots, so the CPU generation already installed fixes the speed grade you can buy.

DL320 Gen11 Memory Specifications

  • Memory type: HPE DDR5 Smart Memory, Registered (RDIMM) — mixing DIMM types is not supported
  • Slots: 16 DIMM slots — 8 channels, 2 DIMMs per channel, all on the single processor
  • Speed grades: DDR5-4800 EC8 with 4th Generation Intel Xeon, DDR5-5600 EC8 with 5th — only the matching grade may be selected
  • Capacities: 16GB single rank x8, 32GB dual rank x8, 64GB dual rank x4 and 96GB dual rank x4, in quantities of 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16
  • Maximum capacity: HPE gives the RDIMM maximum as 2.04 TB and states it as 16 × 128 GB RDIMM at 4800 MT/s. A note in the same table says all processors support up to 2 TB.

Match the speed grade to your processor before you order. HPE allows only DDR5-5600 SKUs with 5th Generation Intel Xeon and only DDR5-4800 SKUs with 4th Generation, and mixing the two grades is not allowed. Populate the second DIMM per channel and either grade drops to 4400 MT/s.

Which DDR5 modules fit the DL320 Gen11?

ModuleRank and widthOffered inWorth knowing
16GBSingle rank x8Both gradesCAS-40-39-39 at 4800, CAS-46-45-45 at 5600
32GBDual rank x8Both gradesThe volume module for general builds
64GBDual rank x4Both gradesx4 width, as Memory Fault Tolerance requires
96GBDual rank x4Both gradesNot mixable with any other memory; needs the high-performance fan kit

The 64GB module is the sweet spot — dual rank x4 at the best cost per gigabyte, and eight of them fill every channel at 1 DIMM per channel, where both grades run at full rate. Fill the second DIMM per channel and both drop to 4400 MT/s.

Choosing the Right DL320 Gen11 Memory

  • Match the speed grade to your processor: only DDR5-5600 SKUs go with 5th Generation Intel Xeon and only DDR5-4800 with 4th, and mixing the two grades is not allowed.
  • Don't mix widths or stacks: x4, x8 and 3DS memory cannot be mixed, and single rank with dual rank only when all 16 slots are filled, in equal quantities.
  • 96GB modules come with strings: they cannot be mixed with any other memory, they need the high-performance fan kit, and on the GPU CTO server they are supported only at 25C ambient and below.
  • Fill the empty slots with blanks — HPE requires a DIMM blank in every unpopulated slot.

DL320 Gen11 Memory FAQ

How much RAM does the HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 support?
The QuickSpecs give a maximum RDIMM capacity of 2.04 TB and state it as 16 x 128 GB RDIMM at 4800 MT/s. A note directly under that table says all processors support up to 2 TB. The largest module in HPE's own option list is 96GB.

What type of memory does the DL320 Gen11 use?
HPE DDR5 Smart Memory in EC8 Registered form (RDIMM), from 16GB single rank x8 to 96GB dual rank x4. Mixing DIMM types is not supported, and DDR4 does not fit this platform.

Should I buy DDR5-4800 or DDR5-5600 memory for the DL320 Gen11?
Match the grade to the processor. Only DDR5-5600 SKUs may be selected with 5th Generation Intel Xeon and only DDR5-4800 SKUs with 4th Generation, and mixing the two grades is not allowed - so the installed CPU decides the kit.

Why did my DL320 Gen11 memory drop to 4400 MT/s?
Because the second DIMM per channel is populated. HPE rates the 5600 MT/s SKUs at 5600 MT/s at 1 DIMM per channel and 4400 MT/s at 2 DIMMs per channel, and rates the 4800 MT/s SKUs at 4800 and 4400 the same way.

How many DIMMs can I install in a DL320 Gen11?
Sixteen, across 8 channels at 2 DIMMs per channel, all fed by the single processor. Total quantities must be 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16, with a DIMM blank in every empty slot.

Can I mix 96GB DIMMs with other capacities in the DL320 Gen11?
No. HPE states that 96GB memory cannot be mixed with any other memory and is supported with only select processors. It also requires the high-performance fan kit, and on the GPU CTO server it is supported only at 25C ambient and below.
