HPE ProLiant DL165 G7 Processors

Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL165 G7, new and refurbished, each complete with heatsink and fans. This is a two-socket AMD platform taking up to two AMD Opteron 6000 series processors — eight, twelve and sixteen core parts — and on a server with 24 DIMM slots the second processor does considerably more than add cores.

DL165 G7 Processor Specifications

  • Sockets: two, on the AMD SR5670/SP5100 chipset, with the server upgradeable to two processors
  • Families: AMD Opteron 6100 and 6200 series in eight, twelve and sixteen core versions, plus a four-core 6204
  • Kits stocked: 6100 series eight-core 6128, 6128HE, 6134 and 6136 from 2.0GHz to 2.4GHz, and twelve-core 6164HE, 6172 and 6174 from 1.7GHz to 2.2GHz
  • Cache: 12MB of shared level 3 cache on the 6100 series parts listed here, and 16MB on 6200 series parts
  • Memory per socket: four memory channels and twelve DIMM slots, which stay unavailable until that socket is filled
  • Wattage: the QuickSpecs rates the standard kits at 115W and the HE kits at 85W as Thermal Design Power, with HE marking the lower-power version of a core count

A second processor does more than add cores. Each socket owns four memory channels and twelve DIMM slots, so with one CPU installed half of the server's 24 slots cannot be used at all. Adding the second is what opens them, and HPE's population rules then ask for the memory to be balanced across both.

Two wattage figures follow these processors and they describe the same chip. The QuickSpecs rates the standard kits at 115W and the HE kits at 85W as Thermal Design Power, and notes that AMD also publishes an Average CPU Power figure, which is the lower number carried in the kit names on this page. The letter matters more than either: an HE part is the low-power version of a core count, so the twelve-core 6164HE trades clock speed for wattage against the twelve-core 6174.

Choosing the Right DL165 G7 Processor

  • A second processor opens the other twelve DIMM slots. With one CPU installed only half of the 24 slots are available, and on a server built for memory capacity that is often the real reason to fit the second.
  • Balance the memory across both sockets. HPE's population rules call for total memory capacity to be balanced between installed processors, so a second CPU usually means buying DIMMs alongside it.
  • Core count, not clock, is where this platform scales. The twelve-core kits run slower per core than the eight-core kits: the 6174 gives twelve cores at 2.2GHz where the 6136 gives eight at 2.4GHz.
  • HE marks the low-power part. The 6128HE and 6164HE are the 85W versions of their core counts, which is worth having where the rack power budget is tighter than the workload.
  • DDR3-1600 is a 6200 series capability. Running DDR3 at 1600MHz depends on a 6200 series Opteron; the 6100 series kits listed here run DDR3 at 1333MHz and below.

Processor choice sets both the memory ceiling and the memory clock — see DL165 G7 memory alongside this page, and expect to buy DIMMs with a second CPU rather than after it. DL165 G7 Processors FAQ

Which processors does the DL165 G7 support?
Up to two AMD Opteron 6000 series processors, in eight, twelve and sixteen core versions, plus a four-core 6204. The kits listed on this page are 6100 series eight-core and twelve-core parts.

What does adding a second processor do on this server?
It adds the cores, and it opens the other twelve DIMM slots. With one processor installed only half of the server's 24 memory slots are available.

How much cache do DL165 G7 processors have?
12MB of shared level 3 cache on the Opteron 6100 series parts listed here, and 16MB on the 6200 series parts.

Why does the same processor show two different wattages?
One is Thermal Design Power and the other is Average CPU Power. The QuickSpecs rates the standard parts at 115W and the HE parts at 85W as TDP, and the ACP figure AMD publishes for the same chips is the lower number in the kit names.

What does the HE suffix mean on an Opteron kit?
It marks the low-power version of a core count. The 6128HE and 6164HE are rated at 85W where the standard parts are rated at 115W.

Do DL165 G7 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every CPU kit listed for this server comes complete with heatsink and fans.
