HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen8 Parts

The HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen8 is a half-height c-Class server blade built on the Intel C600 chipset, taking up to two Xeon E5-2600 series processors across 16 DDR3 DIMM slots. It is not a standalone machine: it installs in an HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000 enclosure, which supplies its power, its cooling and its network fabric. Every part below is genuine HPE, available new and refurbished, and tested for compatibility before it ships. Live pricing for each part number appears in the tables further down this page.

BL460c Gen8 Platform at a Glance

  • Form factor: half-height c-Class server blade, 14.00 lb fully populated — it has no power supplies and no fans of its own
  • Enclosure: HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000; HPE calls for the c7000 to carry 10 fans and the c3000 to carry 6 for optimal cooling of this blade
  • Processors: up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 series, from two to twelve cores each, with 5MB to 30MB of L3 cache depending on model
  • Memory: 16 DDR3 DIMM slots — eight per processor, four channels at two DIMMs per channel — taking HPE SmartMemory RDIMMs, UDIMMs or LRDIMMs to a maximum of 512GB
  • Drive bays: two hot-plug small form factor SAS, SATA or SSD bays on the SmartDrive carrier, reaching 4.0TB on two 2TB drives
  • Storage controller: integrated HPE Smart Array P220i with 512MB flash backed write cache, RAID 0 and RAID 1, and up to 64 logical drives
  • Networking: one FlexibleLOM providing two Ethernet ports, routed to interconnect module bays 1 and 2 in the enclosure
  • Expansion: two x16 PCIe 3.0 mezzanine slots — Type A in slot 1, Type A or Type B in slot 2, which needs a second processor to come alive
  • Management: embedded HPE iLO 4 with a 10/100 Mbps link to the enclosure Onboard Administrator, plus an internal MicroSDHC slot and an internal USB 2.0 connector
  • Also listed below: the QMH2572 8Gb Fibre Channel host bus adapter, QDR and FDR InfiniBand 544M mezzanine adapters, the D2200sb storage blade, the PCI expansion blade and LTO-4 and LTO-5 tape blades

This is a blade, so the enclosure is half the specification. The BL460c Gen8 has no power supplies, fans or rails of its own — it installs in an HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000 enclosure, which supplies power and cooling, and its network ports land in that enclosure's interconnect bays rather than on the blade. Two SFF SmartDrive bays and 16 DDR3 slots are what the blade itself brings.

Specifications on this page are taken from the HPE QuickSpecs for this server, HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen8 Server Blade QuickSpecs, Version 47.

BL460c Gen8 Parts FAQ

What enclosure does the BL460c Gen8 need?
An HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000 enclosure. The blade has no power supplies, fans or rails of its own - the enclosure provides power, cooling and the interconnect bays that its network ports land in.

What processors does the BL460c Gen8 support?
Up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 series processors on the Intel C600 chipset. All processors in one blade must be identical, so a second CPU has to match the one already fitted.

How much memory can a BL460c Gen8 take?
512GB, using sixteen 32GB quad-rank Load Reduced DIMMs. Registered DIMMs reach 256GB with sixteen 16GB modules and Unbuffered DIMMs reach 128GB, and the three technologies cannot be mixed in one blade.

How many hard drives fit in a BL460c Gen8?
Two. The blade has two hot-plug small form factor bays taking SAS, SATA or solid state drives, for a maximum of 4.0TB on two 2TB drives.

Which RAID controller is built into the BL460c Gen8?
An integrated HPE Smart Array P220i with 512MB flash backed write cache. It supports RAID 0 and RAID 1 across the two drive bays and up to 64 logical drives.

Can I move parts from a BL460c G7 into a Gen8 blade?
Some, but fewer than you would expect. HPE states that drives from previous generation servers are not compatible with the Gen8 drive bays and that FlexibleLOMs are not compatible with prior generation c-Class blades, and memory from earlier generations is not qualified for this blade either.
