HPE ProLiant ML310e Gen8 Networking Adapters
Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant ML310e Gen8, new and refurbished. The tower ships with two Gigabit ports from an embedded 330i adapter, and one of those two is shared with iLO — so on a great many of these servers the first add-in card is bought to stop management and data traffic sharing a wire.
ML310e Gen8 Networking Specifications
- Embedded networking: HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 330i Adapter on a BCM5717 controller, two RJ-45 ports at 10Base-T, 100Base-TX and 1000Base-T, on a two-lane PCIe connection
- Management sharing: two rear RJ-45 connectors in total, one of them shared with HPE iLO; a dedicated 1Gb iLO management network port is an option rather than standard
- Cabling for the onboard ports: Category 5 or better for 10/100/1000Base-T, to a maximum of 328 ft (100 m)
- Expansion slots: four, all full height — slot 4 is eight electrical lanes in an x16 connector, slot 3 is x8, slot 2 is four lanes in an x8 connector, and slot 1 is a single lane in an x4 connector and half length
- PCIe generation: slots 4 and 3 are PCIe 3.0 and slots 2 and 1 are PCIe 2.0, with Gen3 operation documented only for the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v2 family
- Gigabit copper stocked: the NC112T single port, the 332T and 361T dual port, and the 331T and NC365T four-port adapters
- 10 Gigabit stocked: the NC523SFP, NC552SFP, 530SFP and 560SFP+ dual-port SFP+ adapters
One of the two onboard Gigabit ports is shared with iLO. If the goal is to keep out-of-band management off the production wire, HPE's answer on this tower is the dedicated iLO management port option rather than another network card. Buy a NIC when the requirement is port count, bandwidth or fibre.
Which card does the job you actually have?
| What you need | Card |
|---|---|
| A third and fourth Gigabit port | 332T or 361T dual port |
| Four more Gigabit ports | 331T or NC365T |
| One more Gigabit port, minimum outlay | NC112T single port |
| 10 Gigabit over SFP+ | NC523SFP, NC552SFP, 530SFP or 560SFP+ |
| iLO on a port of its own | The dedicated iLO management port kit, not a network card |
The last row is the one worth pausing on, because it is not a networking problem dressed as one: if the goal is to separate out-of-band management from production traffic, HPE's answer on this tower is the dedicated iLO management port option, and a four-port NIC does not provide it. Buy a network card when the requirement is bandwidth, port count or fibre.
Choosing the Right ML310e Gen8 Network Adapter
- Count the slots against the storage card. An eight-bay SFF tower has already spent one of the four slots on a standup Smart Array controller.
- Slot 1 is a single lane. It is a PCIe 2.0 x1 electrical connection in an x4 connector and half length, so a four-port or 10 Gigabit card belongs in slot 3 or slot 4.
- Gen3 needs the right processor. Slots 3 and 4 run at PCIe 3.0 only with an Intel Xeon E3-1200 v2 processor fitted; on the Celeron, Pentium and Core i3 options they do not.
- Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without the right optics between them.
- Keep the run inside 100 metres on copper. HPE specifies Category 5 or better and 328 ft for the onboard Gigabit ports.

Slots are shared with the storage card, so read ML310e Gen8 storage controllers before filling them. Also available: ML310e Gen8 memory, drives, power supplies and rack options, or the full ML310e Gen8 parts listing and HPE parts by server model.
ML310e Gen8 Networking Adapters FAQ
How many network ports does an ML310e Gen8 have as standard?
Two RJ-45 Gigabit ports, from an embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 330i Adapter. One of the two is shared with iLO management.
Can iLO have its own network port on this server?
Yes, through the HPE dedicated iLO management port kit. Without it, iLO shares one of the two onboard Gigabit connectors.
Does the ML310e Gen8 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an add-in card. The NC523SFP, NC552SFP, 530SFP and 560SFP+ dual-port SFP+ adapters are stocked for this server.
How many expansion slots does the ML310e Gen8 have?
Four, all full height except slot 1, which is half length. Slot 4 runs eight lanes in an x16 connector, slot 3 is x8, slot 2 is four lanes in an x8 connector and slot 1 is a single lane in an x4 connector.
Are the PCIe slots Gen2 or Gen3?
Slots 4 and 3 are PCIe 3.0 and slots 2 and 1 are PCIe 2.0, but HPE documents Gen3 operation only with an Intel Xeon E3-1200 v2 processor installed.
What cabling do the onboard ports need?
Category 5 or better for 10/100/1000Base-T, up to 328 ft or 100 m. Category 3, 4 or 5 is listed for 10Base-T.
