The HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is the two-socket 2U workhorse of the Gen9 rack line: Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 processors on the Intel C610 chipset, 24 DDR4 DIMM slots, and drive cages that run from 4LFF to 24SFF. DL380 Gen9 Platform at a Glance

• Processors: one or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 CPUs on the Intel C610 chipset — mixing the two families is not supported, but a field upgrade from v3 to v4 is
• Memory: 24 DDR4 DIMM slots — 12 per processor, four channels each, three DIMMs per channel — reaching 768GB on 32GB RDIMMs or 3TB on 128GB LRDIMMs
• Storage: 8SFF, 24SFF, 4LFF or 12LFF hot-plug cages, plus an optional rear 2SFF or 3LFF kit and a six-drive NVMe Express Bay
• Storage controller: the embedded Dynamic Smart Array B140i as standard, with Flexible Smart Array P440ar and P840ar, the P840 and P841, and H240ar, H240 and H241 Smart HBAs above it
• Expansion: three PCIe 3.0 slots on the standard primary riser; the optional three-slot secondary riser (x16, x16, x8) requires the second processor
• Networking: an embedded 4 x 1GbE 331i adapter on every chassis, plus one FlexibleLOM connector for 1GbE, 10GbE or 25GbE
• Power and cooling: a maximum of two Flex Slot hot-plug supplies at 500W, 800W or 1400W, and four or six hot-plug fans depending on chassis
• Management: HPE iLO 4 with 4GB NAND and a dedicated 1Gb port, Intelligent Provisioning, UEFI as the default boot mode and TPM 1.2

The chassis and the processor family decide most of the order. A DL380 Gen9 ships as an 8SFF, 24SFF, 4LFF or 12LFF server: the 8SFF is field-upgradeable to 16 or 24 SFF, the 4LFF is not upgradeable to 12LFF at all. On the processor side, E5-2600 v3 and v4 will not run together, though HPE documents a field upgrade from v3 to v4.

What processors does the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 support?
Up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or E5-2600 v4 processors on the Intel C610 chipset. The two families cannot be mixed, although HPE documents a field upgrade from v3 to v4. Per-socket core counts run from 4 to 18 on v3 and 4 to 22 on v4.

How much memory does the DL380 Gen9 support?
The platform has 24 DDR4 DIMM slots - 12 per processor, four channels per processor, three DIMMs per channel. HPE quotes 3TB from 24 x 128GB LRDIMMs at 2400MHz and 768GB from 24 x 32GB RDIMMs at 2400MHz. With one processor installed only half the slots are available.

How many drives does the DL380 Gen9 hold?
It depends on the drive cage. HPE lists 8SFF, 24SFF, 4LFF and 12LFF front ends, plus an optional rear 2SFF kit or, on the 12LFF, a rear 3LFF kit. An 8SFF server is field-upgradeable to 16 or 24 SFF; the 4LFF chassis is not field-upgradeable to 12LFF.

How many PCIe slots does the DL380 Gen9 have?
Three come standard on the primary riser, all on processor 1: two full-height half-length slots at x8 in x16 connectors, plus one x8 slot. An optional three-slot secondary riser adds x16, x16 and x8 on processor 2, which must be installed first.

Does the DL380 Gen9 have onboard network ports?
Yes. Every chassis ships with an embedded 4 x 1GbE 331i adapter, and the dedicated 1Gb iLO port is separate. A single FlexibleLOM connector takes an optional 1GbE, 10GbE or 25GbE adapter without using a PCIe slot.
