Twelve slots, two per channel, and the processor sets the clock. The DL360e Gen8 carries 12 DDR3 slots — 6 per processor, 3 channels each, 2 DIMMs per channel — and only six are usable with a single processor installed. Because there is no third slot on any channel, the step-down in HPE's Gen8 bandwidth tables at 3 DIMMs per channel cannot happen here; what limits you is the CPU, which ranges from 1600MHz down to 1066MHz by model.

Two DIMMs per channel is as far as this chassis goes, and that is quietly in your favour: HPE's Gen8 bandwidth tables hold native speed at 1 and 2 DIMMs per channel and only step down at 3, which this server cannot reach. What sets your clock is the processor.
Choosing the Right DL360e Gen8 Memory
- Balance across the sockets. HPE recommends spreading capacity evenly between installed processors, loading channels similarly, filling the white first-of-channel slots for 1 DIMM per channel, and seating the heaviest-ranked DIMM furthest from the processor.
- Mixing rules: RDIMMs at 1.35V and 1.5V may be mixed but the system powers them all at the higher voltage; different speeds may be mixed and the server picks a common optimal speed; UDIMM, RDIMM and LRDIMM never mix.
- Only the 32GB LRDIMM reaches 384GB. HPE notes SmartMemory holds 2 DIMMs per channel at 1333MHz and 1.35V there, where third-party memory may manage only 1066MHz at 1.5V.
- Do not carry DIMMs over. HPE states memory from previous generation servers is not compatible with the DL360e Gen8.

The QuickSpecs state 384GB, quoted as 12 x 32GB LRDIMMs at 1333MHz. With registered memory the ceiling is 192GB from 12 x 16GB RDIMMs, and with unbuffered memory it is 96GB from 12 x 8GB UDIMMs.
How many DIMM slots does the DL360e Gen8 have?
Twelve - six per processor, across three memory channels per processor at two DIMMs per channel. If only one processor is installed, only six slots are available; DIMMs 7 through 12 need the second processor.
What type of memory does the DL360e Gen8 use?
HPE SmartMemory DDR3 in three forms: Registered (RDIMM), Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM) and Load Reduced (LRDIMM). Kits run from a 2GB UDIMM to a 32GB quad-rank LRDIMM, one DIMM per kit, and HPE's population rules say not to mix the three types.
What is the maximum memory speed of the DL360e Gen8?
DDR3-1600, and only with the right processor. HPE's Memory Speed by Processor Model table puts E5-2470, E5-2450 and the E5-2420 v2 through E5-2470 v2 parts at 1600/1333/1066MHz, while E5-2407, E5-2403 and E5-2430L are rated at 1066MHz only.
Does filling all 12 slots slow the DL360e Gen8 down?
No. The platform is two DIMMs per channel, and HPE's Gen8 bandwidth tables hold native speed at both one and two DIMMs per channel. The step-down those tables show at three DIMMs per channel cannot occur here, because no channel has a third slot.
Can I use memory from an older HP server in the DL360e Gen8?
No. The QuickSpecs state that HP memory from previous generation servers is not compatible with the DL360e Gen8, and that HP SmartMemory is required to realize the performance capabilities listed in the document.
