HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen10 Memory
Genuine HPE DDR4 Smart Memory for the HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen10, new and refurbished. The server carries 16 DIMM slots, eight per processor across six channels, and the processor decides the kit before the slot does: DDR4-2933 kits are supported only with 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, and DDR4-2666 kits only with 1st Generation.
DL160 Gen10 Memory Specifications
- Type: HPE DDR4 Smart Memory, Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM); mixing RDIMM and LRDIMM is not supported
- Slots: 16 in total, eight per processor over six channels — two channels accept two DIMMs each and the other four accept one
- Maximum capacity: 1.0TB, reached with sixteen 64GB modules at 2933 MT/s, in either RDIMM or LRDIMM form
- Per-socket ceiling: 1TB per socket on 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable processors, and 768GB per socket on 1st Generation
- Kits on this page: 8GB single-rank, 16GB single-rank and dual-rank, 32GB dual-rank and 64GB dual-rank Registered kits, each one a single DIMM
- Protection: Advanced ECC, which corrects single and multi-bit errors within a single DRAM chip, and Online Spare, which switches to a spare rank when one degrades
The processor decides the kit before the slot does. DDR4-2933 kits are supported only with 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and DDR4-2666 kits only with 1st Generation, and HPE does not support a field upgrade between the two generations. Read the second digit of the processor model number — x1xx or x2xx — before ordering a single module.
Which DDR4 Kit Does Your Processor Generation Take?
| 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable (x2xx) | 1st Generation Xeon Scalable (x1xx) | |
|---|---|---|
| Memory kit speed | DDR4-2933 | DDR4-2666 |
| Memory capacity per socket | 1TB | 768GB |
| Kit sizes on this page | 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB | 16GB, 32GB |
| Field upgrade to the other generation | Not supported | Not supported |
The generation of the processor already in the machine settles the question, and the second digit of its model number states it plainly. Within a generation, rated speed is still a ceiling rather than a promise: HPE documents the achieved speed as a function of memory type, configuration and processor model, and individual Silver and Bronze parts are rated at 2400 and 2133 MT/s regardless of the kit fitted.
Choosing the Right DL160 Gen10 Memory
- Read the processor model before the part number. A DDR4-2933 kit in a 1st Generation server is the wrong kit, and no field upgrade across the two generations is supported.
- Registered and Load Reduced cannot be mixed. Whichever type is fitted is what the rest of the server has to match.
- Six DIMMs per processor put one module on every channel. The seventh and eighth go into the two channels that accept a second module, so a full sixteen-slot fill is not an evenly balanced one.
- Rank is part of the specification. 16GB comes both as single-rank x4 and as dual-rank x8, and the two are different modules despite the shared capacity.
- Every HPE kit here is one DIMM. A 256GB upgrade is four 64GB kits, not a boxed set, and refurbished modules are where most of the value on this platform sits.

DL160 Gen10 Memory FAQ
What is the maximum memory in a DL160 Gen10?
1.0TB, using sixteen 64GB modules at 2933 MT/s. That figure assumes two 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable processors, each of which carries a 1TB per-socket capacity; 1st Generation processors carry 768GB per socket.
How many memory slots does the DL160 Gen10 have?
Sixteen, arranged as eight per processor across six channels. With one processor installed, only eight are usable.
Why does the server have eight slots but six channels per processor?
Two of the six channels accept two DIMMs each and the remaining four accept one. That is what makes eight slots out of six channels, and it is why a six-DIMM fill per processor is the balanced one.
Can I use DDR4-2933 memory in a DL160 Gen10?
Only with 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. A 1st Generation server takes DDR4-2666 kits, and HPE does not support a field upgrade from one processor generation to the other.
Can I mix RDIMM and LRDIMM in a DL160 Gen10?
No. Mixing Registered and Load Reduced memory is not supported. Whichever type the server runs today is what an upgrade has to match.
Do HPE memory kits for this server contain more than one DIMM?
No. Each kit listed for this server is a single DIMM, so filling all sixteen slots means sixteen kits.
