Mixing power supplies is not supported. HPE requires every supply inside one server to be exactly the same model, and Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus units cannot be combined — two 750W supplies are still a mismatch if the grades differ. Oversizing costs efficiency as well as money: a supply running far below its rated load sits away from its best efficiency point, and in a tower that heat lands in the room the server stands in. HPE publishes a Power Advisor for sizing a configuration; the shortcut on a server of this age is to match what is fitted, unless it has gained processors, cages or graphics cards since.
Choosing the Right ML350p Gen8 Power Supply
- Read the label on the installed unit first. HPE requires every supply in one server to be the same model, so the existing supply is the specification, not a starting point.
- Platinum Plus and Gold do not mix. Two 750W units are still a mismatch if the grades differ, and mismatched supplies produce errors rather than running at the lower rating.
- Redundancy means two identical units. A 1+1 configuration is a matched pair; one supply in a two-bay chassis is not redundant, whatever its rating.
- −48VDC is a different world. That unit belongs on DC rectifier feeds and ships with no power cable at all, using a terminal block so the cord can be made up on site.
- If the noise is the problem, look at the fans. Entry and base models run three non-redundant fans; the redundant fan kit adds the fourth plus baffles and louvers, as the performance model ships.
