Four onboard Gigabit ports cover a great many tower deployments, so the honest first question is whether bandwidth is actually short or just unbalanced across the ports already fitted. Where a card is genuinely needed, put a 10 Gigabit adapter in one of the three PCIe 3.0 x16 slots that run at full x16 speed — four of the nine slots are x8 connectors wired at x4, a narrower pipe than such a card expects.
Choosing the Right ML350p Gen8 Network Adapter
- Count usable slots, not total slots. Nine slots become four on a single-processor machine, because slots 5 to 9 depend on the second processor.
- Check the electrical width, not the connector. Four of the PCIe 3.0 slots are x8 connectors running at x4 speed, and one slot is PCIe 2.0.
- Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card will not connect to a 10GBASE-T switch port; the 530T and 561T are the RJ-45 answer to that problem.
- Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
- Full-length cards fit here. Every slot in this chassis is full length, which is one practical advantage a 5U tower holds over a 1U or 2U rack server.
