HPE ProLiant DL585a Gen13 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR5 memory for the HPE ProLiant DL585a Gen13, new and refurbished, shipped tested or factory sealed. The DL585a Gen13 gives its two 6th Gen AMD EPYC 9006 SP7 processors 32 DDR5 DIMM slots, 16 per processor on 16 channels, and takes two module families: HPE DDR5-8000 Registered Smart Memory (RDIMM), including a 256GB 3DS kit, and HPE Multiplexed Rank Smart Memory (MRDIMM) at 12800 MT/s.

DL585a Gen13 Memory Specifications

  • DIMM slots: 32 — 16 per processor, 16 channels per processor, one DIMM per channel
  • Supported types: RDIMM and MRDIMM
  • Maximum capacity and speed: HPE states 8.0 TB as 32 × 256 GB RDIMM at 8000 MT/s, and 4.0 TB as 32 × 128 GB MRDIMM at 12800 MT/s; the maximum speed is limited by the processor
  • Supported populations: 2, 4, 8, 12 or 16 DIMMs per processor; HPE's configurator asks for four or more kits
  • RDIMM kits listed: 32GB (1×32GB) Dual Rank x8, 64GB (1×64GB) Dual Rank x4, 96GB (1×96GB) Dual Rank x4, 128GB (1×128GB) Dual Rank x4, all DDR5-8000 CAS-64-64-64 EC8 Registered Smart Memory, and 256GB (1×256GB) Quad Rank x4 DDR5-8000 CAS-74-64-64 EC8 Registered 3DS Smart Memory
  • MRDIMM kits listed: 64GB (1×64GB) and 128GB (1×128GB) Quad Rank x8 DDR5-128/64 CAS-52-52-52 EC8 Multiplexed Rank Smart Memory
  • Ordering: the -B21 memory SKUs are for stand-alone memory; each has a corresponding -F21 SKU used only when a server is configured with integrated memory at the factory
  • GPU guidance: HPE recommends system memory equal to at least twice the total GPU memory for best performance across common workloads

Thirty-two slots, one DIMM per channel, two families. The DL585a Gen13 gives each processor 16 slots on 16 channels, so a full 32-DIMM population is the only way to use every channel and there is no second-DIMM speed step-down. The choice is RDIMM at 8000 MT/s, up to 8 TB with the 256GB 3DS kit, or MRDIMM at 12800 MT/s, up to 4 TB. HPE's own rule of thumb sets the floor: system memory of at least twice the GPU memory, which for eight RTX PRO 6000 accelerators means 1.5 TB or more. And whatever sub-heading HPE printed them under, the -B21 kits on this page are the stand-alone kits.

How much memory can the DL585a Gen13 hold?

HPE's stated maximum is 8.0 TB of RDIMM, as 32 × 256 GB at 8000 MT/s, and 4.0 TB of MRDIMM, as 32 × 128 GB at 12800 MT/s. Both are reachable from the kits in the Version 1 option list. The configurations below use the kits HPE lists and the populations HPE supports, across both processors.

KitType16 DIMMs (8 per CPU)24 DIMMs (12 per CPU)32 DIMMs (full)
32GB Dual Rank x8 DDR5-8000RDIMM512GB768GB1TB
64GB Dual Rank x4 DDR5-8000RDIMM1TB1.5TB2TB
96GB Dual Rank x4 DDR5-8000RDIMM1.5TB2.25TB3TB
128GB Dual Rank x4 DDR5-8000RDIMM2TB3TB4TB
256GB Quad Rank x4 DDR5-8000 3DSRDIMM4TB6TB8TB (HPE's stated RDIMM maximum)
64GB Quad Rank x8 MRDIMMMRDIMM1TB1.5TB2TB
128GB Quad Rank x8 MRDIMMMRDIMM2TB3TB4TB (HPE's stated MRDIMM maximum)

Because the DL585a Gen13 runs one DIMM per channel, a full 32-DIMM population is the only way to use every channel on both processors, and there is no second-DIMM speed step-down to plan around. HPE's GPU guidance sets the floor: eight RTX PRO 6000 accelerators carry 768GB of GPU memory between them, so HPE's "at least twice the GPU memory" recommendation points at 1.5TB or more of system memory for a full GPU build.

Choosing the Right DL585a Gen13 Memory

  • Pick one family. HPE lists RDIMM and MRDIMM as the two supported types and describes them as separate kits with different speeds, CAS latencies and rank structures. Build on one family and expand with the same.
  • Populate both processors evenly. HPE supports 2, 4, 8, 12 or 16 DIMMs per processor. Sixteen matched modules per processor uses all 16 channels; 12 leaves four channels empty on each side.
  • Match the kit, not just the capacity. The 32GB RDIMM is the only x8 Registered kit, the 64GB, 96GB and 128GB RDIMMs are Dual Rank x4, the 256GB kit is Quad Rank x4 3DS, and both MRDIMM kits are Quad Rank x8. Expanding an installed server means ordering the same kit again.
  • Order -B21 for an upgrade. The -F21 SKUs in HPE's document are factory-integration codes and are not sold as stand-alone parts; every memory kit on this page is a -B21 kit, whatever heading HPE printed it under.
  • Read the rank and speed basics first if DDR5 server memory is new to you: memory rank in HPE servers, why memory speed matters and what CAS latency means.

DL585a Gen13 Memory FAQ

How much RAM does the HPE ProLiant DL585a Gen13 support?
HPE states 8.0 TB as 32 x 256 GB RDIMM at 8000 MT/s, and 4.0 TB as 32 x 128 GB MRDIMM at 12800 MT/s. The Version 1 option list carries all the kits needed to reach either figure: 32GB, 64GB, 96GB, 128GB and 256GB 3DS RDIMM kits and 64GB and 128GB MRDIMM kits.

What type of memory does the DL585a Gen13 use?
HPE DDR5 Smart Memory in two families: DDR5-8000 Registered (RDIMM) kits, Dual Rank x8 or x4 and a Quad Rank x4 3DS kit, with CAS-64-64-64 or CAS-74-64-64 EC8 timing, and 12800 MT/s Multiplexed Rank (MRDIMM) kits, Quad Rank x8 with CAS-52-52-52 EC8 timing. All are HPE -B21 stand-alone kits.

How many DIMM slots does the DL585a Gen13 have?
32 slots, 16 per processor on 16 channels, one DIMM per channel. HPE supports 2, 4, 8, 12 or 16 DIMMs per processor, and its configurator asks for four or more memory kits in total.

How much memory do I need for the GPUs in a DL585a Gen13?
HPE recommends system memory equal to at least twice the total GPU memory for best performance across common workloads. Eight NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 96GB accelerators carry 768GB of GPU memory, which points at 1.5TB or more of system memory; a 24-DIMM population of 64GB RDIMMs or a 16-DIMM population of 96GB RDIMMs reaches it.

Can I mix RDIMM and MRDIMM in a DL585a Gen13?
Treat them as separate families. HPE lists them as two supported types with different speeds, timings and rank structures, and sells them as different kits. Build on one family and expand with the same kit; the 64GB and 128GB capacities exist in both families, so check which is installed before adding to it.

Why does HPE's document list the -B21 kits under 'Integrated memory'?
The sub-headings in HPE's Version 1 option list are the wrong way round: its own note says the -B21 SKUs are for ordering stand-alone memory and the -F21 SKUs are for factory-integrated memory. The -B21 kits on this page are the stand-alone kits; the -F21 codes are factory-only and are not sold as parts.
