HPE ProLiant DL585a Gen13 Storage Controllers
Genuine HPE storage controllers for the HPE ProLiant DL585a Gen13, new and refurbished, shipped tested or factory sealed. HPE lists one controller for this server: the HPE MR932i-p x32 Internal Lanes / Internal Cache PCIe Gen5 PQC30 plug-in tri-mode controller, used on the one-controller and two-controller configuration topologies, with the direct-attach topology needing no controller at all.
DL585a Gen13 Storage Controller Specifications
- HPE MR932i-p PCIe Gen5 PQC30: 32 internal lanes, internal cache backed by the PQC30 capacitor, PCIe Gen5 plug-in card, tri-mode
- Maximum quantity: two per server; HPE requires exactly one on the one-controller topology and exactly two on the two-controller topology
- Slots: HPE reserves slots 9 and 10 for the controllers on the controller topologies
- Drive attach: 8 EDSFF E3.S NVMe bays through one controller; 16 bays through two controllers with the 16EDSFF upgrade kit
- Cabling: the HPE ProLiant DL585a Gen13 MR932i-p Backplane Cable Kit, included by default on the controller topologies and ordered separately when adding controllers in the field — listed under Cable Kits on the DL585a Gen13 parts page
- Boot: the NS204mff hot-plug boot device sits in the front chassis slot and occupies no PCIe slot; listed under Boot Controllers on the parts page
- Cache backup: the MR932i-p carries its own internal cache and PQC30 backup; HPE lists no separate energy pack for this server
One controller, and the topology decides how many you need. HPE lists a single storage controller for the DL585a Gen13, the MR932i-p x32 PCIe Gen5 PQC30, capped at two per server in slots 9 and 10. The direct-attach topologies use none, the 7-slot topology takes exactly one, and the 16EDSFF topology takes exactly two — the second controller is what unlocks the sixteenth bay. A field-added controller also needs the MR932i-p backplane cable kit, which HPE includes only when the server is built on a controller topology.
Which DL585a Gen13 topology needs a controller?
HPE configures the DL585a Gen13 by topology, and the topology decides the controller count before the drive count does.
| HPE configuration topology | E3.S bays | Controllers | PCIe Gen6 x16 slots |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6-slot, 8EDSFF, direct attach | 8 | None | 6 (4 front full-length, 2 front 3/4-length) |
| 8-slot, 8EDSFF | 8 | None | 8 (adds 2 rear half-length) |
| 7-slot, 8EDSFF, 1 controller | 8 | 1 × MR932i-p | 7 (adds 1 rear half-length) |
| 6-slot, 16EDSFF, 2 controllers | 16 | 2 × MR932i-p | 6 |
All four topologies carry eight double-wide GPU slots and one OCP 3.0 slot. The controller topologies trade rear PCIe slots for storage: adding the second controller and the 16EDSFF kit takes the server from eight bays to sixteen but leaves it with the six front slots only.
Choosing the Right DL585a Gen13 Storage Controller
- Match the controller count to the topology. One MR932i-p on the 7-slot topology, two on the 16EDSFF topology, none on the direct-attach topologies. HPE's configurator enforces it; a field upgrade should follow it.
- Order the cable kit with a field-added controller. The MR932i-p backplane cable kit is included only when the server is built on a controller topology; adding a controller later means ordering the kit.
- Sixteen bays means two controllers. The 16EDSFF upgrade kit is allowed only with two MR932i-p controllers; it is not a stand-alone capacity upgrade.
- The boot device is separate. The NS204mff boot controller, its enablement kit and two 960GB drive modules are ordered together and do not use a PCIe slot or the MR932i-p.

DL585a Gen13 Storage Controllers FAQ
What storage controller does the HPE ProLiant DL585a Gen13 use?
The HPE MR932i-p x32 Internal Lanes / Internal Cache PCIe Gen5 PQC30 plug-in tri-mode controller, up to two per server. HPE requires one on the 7-slot one-controller topology and two on the 16EDSFF two-controller topology; the direct-attach topologies use none.
Does the DL585a Gen13 need a storage controller?
Not on every topology. HPE's 6-slot direct-attach and 8-slot topologies cable the eight E3.S bays to the processors with no controller. The controller topologies add one or two MR932i-p controllers, and the second controller is what unlocks the 16-bay configuration.
How many MR932i-p controllers can a DL585a Gen13 take?
Two at most. HPE restricts the controller to a maximum quantity of two, in slots 9 and 10, and ties the count to the configuration topology: exactly one on the 7-slot topology, exactly two on the 16EDSFF topology.
Does the MR932i-p need a battery or capacitor in a DL585a Gen13?
The controller name carries its own answer: PQC30 is the capacitor-backed cache module built into the MR932i-p. HPE lists no separate Smart Storage battery or energy pack for this server.
What cable kit does the MR932i-p need in a DL585a Gen13?
The HPE ProLiant DL585a Gen13 MR932i-p Backplane Cable Kit. HPE includes it by default when the server is configured on a controller topology, and lists it as orderable when a controller is added during a field upgrade.
