HPE ProLiant DL385p Gen8 Power Supplies

Genuine HPE Common Slot power supplies for the HPE ProLiant DL385p Gen8, new and refurbished. This QuickSpecs lists three wattages — 460W, 750W and 1200W — in Platinum Plus and Gold grades plus a 750W -48VDC supply, and the rule attached to all of them is absolute: mixing power supplies in one server is not supported.

DL385p Gen8 Power Supply Specifications

  • Option kits: 460W, 750W and 1200W Common Slot Platinum Plus at 94% efficiency; 460W and 750W Common Slot Gold at 92%; and a 750W Common Slot -48VDC supply
  • Redundancy: two hot-plug bays at the rear for optional 1+1 or n+n; Entry and Storage Centric models ship one supply, the other two models ship two
  • Rated steady-state output: the 460W and 750W hold their rating at both 100–120 VAC and 200–240 VAC; the 1200W delivers 800W at 100 VAC, 900W at 120 VAC and 1200W only at 200 to 240 VAC
  • Input: rated line voltage 100–120 VAC and 200–240 VAC at 50 to 60 Hz
  • Intelligent Power Discovery: Common Slot Platinum Plus supplies are required to enable it
  • -48VDC caveat: it ships without a power cable, using a terminal block for a custom cord

Only the 1200W supply cares about your feed. It is rated 800W at 100 VAC, 900W at 120 VAC and 1200W at 200 to 240 VAC, while the 460W and 750W supplies deliver their full rating on either. Mixing power supplies in one server is not supported — all of them must be exactly the same model, Gold and Platinum Plus included.

What does each DL385p Gen8 power supply deliver?

SupplyRated steady-state outputRated input currentMaximum heat output
460W Common Slot460 W at 100–120 and 200–240 VAC5.5 A / 2.6 A1794 / 1725 BTU/hr
750W Common Slot750 W at 100–120 and 200–240 VAC8.9 A / 4.3 A2925 / 2812 BTU/hr
1200W Common Slot800 W at 100 VAC, 900 W at 120 VAC, 1200 W at 200–240 VAC10 A / 4.9 A3530 / 4600 BTU/hr

Currents and heat are quoted at 100 and 200 VAC respectively. Only the 1200W supply is voltage-sensitive: on a 100V circuit it is rated to 800W, two thirds of its label, while the 460W and 750W deliver their full rating on either feed.

Choosing the Right DL385p Gen8 Power Supply

  • Never mix models, wattages or efficiency grades. HPE states all supplies inside a server must be exactly the same model, and that non-matched supplies produce errors and fail to operate.
  • Order the part number already fitted. A 460W Gold and a 460W Platinum Plus are the same wattage and still an unsupported pair.
  • Size to the configuration. HPE recommends running the Power Advisor first: a two-processor 24-DIMM 25 SFF build is a different load from a single 6320 with eight drives.
  • Refurbished supplies are a low-risk buy — sealed, tested hot-plug modules, and the usual way to fill the second bay for 1+1 redundancy.

DL385p Gen8 Power Supplies FAQ

What power supplies does the HPE ProLiant DL385p Gen8 use?
HPE Common Slot hot-plug supplies in 460W, 750W and 1200W. The QuickSpecs list Platinum Plus versions of all three at 94% efficiency, Gold versions of the 460W and 750W at 92%, and a 750W -48VDC supply.

How many power supplies does a DL385p Gen8 hold?
Two, in hot-plug bays at the rear. Optional 1+1 or n+n redundancy comes from adding a second supply. The Entry and Storage Centric models ship with one; the Dedicated Workload and Maximized Consolidation models ship with two.

Does the 1200W supply deliver 1200W on a 120V circuit?
No. Its rated steady-state output is 800W at 100 VAC, 900W at 120 VAC and 1200W at 200 to 240 VAC. The 460W and 750W supplies are different - each delivers its full rating on both 100-120 VAC and 200-240 VAC.

Can I mix power supplies in a DL385p Gen8?
No. HPE states that mixing power supplies in the same server is not supported, that all supplies inside a server must be exactly the same model, and that mixing Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus certified supplies is not supported.

Do DL385p Gen8 power supply kits include a power cord?
The AC option kits include the power supply and one PDU IEC cable. ProLiant DL servers ship with a 6-foot C14 to C13 PDU cord rather than a 110V wall cord, so a NEMA 5-15 to C13 cord is ordered separately. The 750W -48VDC supply ships with no cable at all.

How much heat does a DL385p Gen8 power supply put out?
HPE quotes a maximum of 1794 BTU/hr at 100 VAC for the 460W supply, 2925 BTU/hr for the 750W and 3530 BTU/hr for the 1200W, rising to 4600 BTU/hr on the 1200W at 200 VAC. Use the HPE Power Advisor to size a specific configuration.
