HPE ProLiant DL384 Gen12 Drives
The HPE ProLiant DL384 Gen12 takes E3.S NVMe SSDs on the EC1 carrier in its front EDSFF bays, and up to two M.2 NVMe SSDs. The factory configuration sets how many E3.S drives it holds: 2 or 4 with one GH200 superchip, 4 or 8 with two. HPE states that the DL384 Gen12 supports neither hardware RAID controllers nor hot-pluggable drives, and recommends the M.2 drives, which run at PCIe Gen3, for boot.

Which drives fit the DL384 Gen12
The factory configuration sets how many E3.S bays the server has, and it cannot be upgraded in the field. HPE's counts:

How many E3.S bays? How to tell
- Count the front E3.S bays. Two or four means one GH200 superchip; four or eight means two.
- Match the factory setting to the list: P72451-B21, P72454-B21 and P72457-B21 for one superchip (2, 2 and 4 drives); P72460-B21, P72463-B21 and P72466-B21 for two (4, 4 and 8 drives).
- Check the GH200 kit. P71406-B21 is the single-superchip kit (1P) and P71407-B21 the dual-superchip GH200 NVL2 kit (2P), both on server P71411-B21.

Three rules before you order
NVMe only: E3.S EC1 and M.2
HPE lists E3.S EC1 NVMe SSDs for the front bays and M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs for the two M.2 positions. The M.2 devices run at PCIe Gen3, and HPE recommends them for boot drives, not for local cache.
No RAID controller, no hot plug
HPE states that this server supports neither hardware RAID controllers nor hot-pluggable drives. Boot options are set in HPE iLO: the M.2 NVMe drives, the E3.S NVMe drives, or PXE over the network.
The drive count is set at the factory
The maximum number of drives, PCIe and OCP is set at the factory and is not field upgradeable; the drives themselves may be upgraded. With two superchips, the unbalanced configuration (P72469-B21) fills the first GH200 first, and the balanced one (P72472-B21) places drives equally on both.

What drives fit the HPE ProLiant DL384 Gen12?
E3.S EC1 NVMe SSDs in the front EDSFF bays, and up to two M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs. HPE lists only NVMe drives for this server.
Can I hot-swap drives in the DL384 Gen12?
No. HPE states that in this NVIDIA Grace product generation neither hardware RAID controllers nor hot-pluggable drives are supported.
How many drives does the DL384 Gen12 hold?
Up to 8 E3.S drives with two GH200 superchips, plus up to two M.2 drives, by HPE's count. One superchip supports 2 E3.S drives, or 4 with one PCIe slot fewer.
Can I add more E3.S bays later?
