Genuine HPE rack hardware for the HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8, new and refurbished. This is a 2U chassis whose rail kits are optional — HPE states they are no longer included standard — so rails, cable management, console access and location discovery are all separate part numbers.

- Rail generation: Gen8 rail kits changed significantly from prior generation kits, and the 2U cable management arm is not available with friction rails
- Location discovery: 36U, 42U and 47U Location Discovery Kits (BW945A, BW946A, BW947A), an LCD8500 kit (TL052A) and a Rack LED Light Kit (BW939A)
- Console access: LCD8500 1U rackmount console kits in eight national builds, USB keyboard and mouse kits, and the KVM USB console interface adapter (336047-B21)

Rails are the line item that catches people out here. HPE states plainly that rail kits are optional for the DL380e Gen8 and no longer standard, in configure-to-order as well. Only the ball bearing kits telescope, so friction rails give up in-rack service and cannot take the cable management arm.
Choosing the Right DL380e Gen8 Rack Options
- Match the rail kit to the chassis. SFF and LFF kits are separate part numbers because the chassis differ in depth, 27.5 in against 29.5 in. Do not reuse pre-Gen8 rails: HPE states Gen8 kits changed significantly.
- Size location discovery to the rack, not the server. The 36U, 42U and 47U kits are separate part numbers, and Insight Control uses the data for asset tracking and power management.
- Most of these servers never need a keyboard at the rack. iLO 4 is standard with a dedicated 1Gb management port, and iLO Advanced activates the full virtual console. Where you do need one, layout is a part number.

It depends on the chassis. HPE lists the 2U Small Form Factor Ball Bearing Gen8 Rail Kit with CMA, 663478-B21, for SFF versions and the Large Form Factor kit, 663480-B21, for LFF. Both telescope, allowing in-rack serviceability.
Can I use older HP rails with a DL380e Gen8?
HPE advises against it. The QuickSpecs state that Gen8 rail kits have changed significantly from prior generation rail kits and ask you to review the installation documentation that comes with the server before installing it.

Do I need a KVM switch to manage a DL380e Gen8?
Not usually. HP iLO 4 with its dedicated 1Gb management network port is standard, and the iLO Advanced license activates the full virtual keyboard, video and mouse remote console. The KVM USB console interface adapter, 336047-B21, is there for rack-side access to an HPE console switch.
