HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8 Processors
Genuine HPE-qualified Intel Xeon E5-2400 v2 and E5-2400 processor kits for the HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8, new and refurbished. The "e" is the entry line, and the socket is why: this server takes the E5-2400 family, not the E5-2600 parts the DL380p Gen8 uses. HPE lists up to two processors and states that mixing processor models is not supported.
DL380e Gen8 Processor Specifications
- Sockets: two, on the Intel C600 Series chipset, upgradeable to 20 cores
- E5-2400 v2 family: the 4-core E5-2403 v2 at 1.8GHz through the 10-core E5-2470 v2 at 2.4GHz, 60W to 95W, with 25MB of L3 on ten-core parts down to 10MB on quad-core
- E5-2400 family: the 4-core E5-2403 at 1.8GHz through the 8-core E5-2470 at 2.3GHz, 60W to 95W, 10MB to 20MB of L3
- QPI: 6.4 GT/s on entry parts, 7.2 GT/s on base and 8.0 GT/s on performance, with rated memory of 1066, 1333 or 1600MHz
- Kit rule: every processor here is a DL380e Gen8 kit ending in -B21 — the matching -L21 numbers are factory-integration only
Processors go in as a matched pair, and only -B21 kits ship. HPE states mixing different processor models is not supported and lists the server as upgradeable to two processors and 20 cores. The -L21 numbers in this QuickSpecs are factory-integration only. The second CPU also lights the other six DIMM slots and is required before the optional secondary riser's slots 5 and 6 can be used.
Which processors does the DL380e Gen8 support?
| Processor | Cores | Clock | TDP | Rated memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E5-2470 v2, E5-2450L v2 | 10 | 1.7–2.4GHz | 60–95W | 1600MHz |
| E5-2450 v2, E5-2440 v2 | 8 | 1.9–2.5GHz | 95W | 1600MHz |
| E5-2430 v2, E5-2430L v2, E5-2420 v2 | 6 | 2.2–2.5GHz | 60–80W | 1600MHz |
| E5-2407 v2, E5-2403 v2 | 4 | 1.8–2.4GHz | 80W | 1333MHz |
| E5-2400 series, E5-2403 to E5-2470 | 4–8 | 1.8–2.4GHz | 60–95W | 1600MHz and below |
The ceiling is what separates this platform from its p-series sibling. The DL380e Gen8 is a two-socket E5-2400 server: 20 cores at the top, three memory channels per processor, 12 DIMM slots. The DL380p Gen8 sits on the E5-2600 family with its own socket, risers and cage kits, so a processor bought for one will not serve the other — check the model name on the kit, not just the generation.
Choosing the Right DL380e Gen8 Processor
- Buy a matched pair. Mixing processor models is not supported, so the second CPU must match the first — and it is what brings the other six DIMM slots into use and lets the optional secondary riser (661628-B21) be populated. The -B21 kits include the extra fan.
- Read the memory column. 1600MHz needs a base or performance part; the E5-2407 v2 and E5-2403 v2 cap at 1333MHz, and the E5-2407, E5-2403 and E5-2430L at 1066MHz.
- Cores or clock, not both. The 10-core E5-2470 v2 runs 2.4GHz at 95W, the E5-2450L v2 trades clock for 60W, and the 6-core E5-2430 v2 reaches 2.5GHz at 80W.
- Crossing families needs care. HPE points to a Customer Advisory of requirements and limitations before any E5-2400 to E5-2400 v2 upgrade.

DL380e Gen8 Processors FAQ
What processors does the HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8 support?
Intel Xeon E5-2400 v2 and E5-2400 series processors on the Intel C600 Series chipset, in up to two sockets. The e line takes the E5-2400 family; the DL380p Gen8 takes the E5-2600 family, and the two are not interchangeable.
What is the maximum core count of the DL380e Gen8?
Twenty cores. HPE lists the server as upgradeable to two processors and 20 cores, meaning two 10-core parts - the E5-2470 v2 at 2.4GHz and 95W, or the E5-2450L v2 at 1.7GHz and 60W. With the first-generation E5-2400 series the maximum is 16 cores.
Can I mix processor models in a DL380e Gen8?
No. The QuickSpecs state that mixing different processor models is not supported, so both sockets have to carry the same part. Plan an upgrade as a matched pair rather than a spare CPU dropped into the empty socket.
Can I upgrade a DL380e Gen8 from E5-2400 to E5-2400 v2 processors?
HPE documents a processor upgrade from Intel Xeon E5-2400 to E5-2400 v2 and points to a Customer Advisory covering requirements and limitations to read before starting. Both processors in the server must end up the same model.
Does the second processor change what the DL380e Gen8 can do?
Yes, in three ways. It brings the other six DIMM slots into use, HPE states it must be installed before the optional secondary riser and its slots 5 and 6 can be populated, and the -B21 processor option kits include the additional fan needed for a redundant fan configuration.
What is the difference between a -B21 and a -L21 processor kit?
The -B21 kit is the orderable option you install yourself. The -L21 numbers are factory-integration only - HPE marks FIO as an option available only as a factory installable option - so the -L21 kits in the configure-to-order section are not sold as field upgrades.
