HPE ProLiant DL380 G5 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL380 G5, new and refurbished. The server takes up to two Intel Xeon processors for eight cores in total on the Intel 5000P chipset, and HPE does not support mixing different processor models — so a second CPU has to match the first exactly.

- Cache: 12MB of level 2 cache as 2 × 6MB on 5400 series parts, 8MB as 2 × 4MB on 5300 series, and 6MB on 5200 series
- Front side bus: 1333MHz on every kit listed except the E5205, which runs a 1066MHz bus
- Mixing: not supported — both sockets must carry the same processor model

A second processor has to be identical to the first. HPE does not support mixing different processor models in one DL380 G5, so a two-socket upgrade means two of the same kit. The processor also sets the memory clock: a 1333MHz front side bus runs the Fully Buffered DIMMs at 667MHz, a 1066MHz bus holds them at 533MHz.

The L parts are the interesting ones on this platform. An L5430 and an E5430 are both quad-core at 2.66GHz on a 1333MHz bus, and the L draws 50 watts against the E's 80 — 60 watts of difference across two sockets, on a chassis whose supply rating falls with the input voltage. The X parts buy clock, not efficiency.
Choosing the Right DL380 G5 Processor
- A second processor must match the first. Mixing different processor models is not supported, so going to two CPUs means two of the same kit unless the existing one is coming out.
- The processor sets the memory clock. A 1333MHz front side bus runs the Fully Buffered DIMMs at 667MHz; a 1066MHz bus holds them at 533MHz, whatever the modules are rated for.
- Do not assume an L part is the slow option. At the same clock and core count it is the cheaper part to run, and on this generation the wattage classes overlap heavily.
- Check upgradeability before buying quad-core. HPE hedges here: some earlier shipping models may not support the quad-core upgrade, and 5100 dual-core models cannot be upgraded to 5200 dual-core parts.
- Every kit includes the heatsink and fans. There is no separate thermal kit to order alongside the processor.
