HPE ProLiant DL360 G7 Hard Drives
Genuine HPE hot-plug hard drives for the HPE ProLiant DL360 G7, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. This is a 1U chassis with four 2.5-inch SFF bays as standard and eight at most — there is no large form factor cage for it, so every drive that goes in is a 2.5-inch hot-plug unit in an HPE carrier.
DL360 G7 Drive Specifications
- Standard bays: four hot-plug small form factor (2.5-inch) SAS or SATA bays
- Maximum bays: eight, with the DL360 G6/G7 SFF hard drive backplane kit fitted to add slots 5 to 8
- The eight-bay trade: the integrated optical drive is supported on four-bay models only, so converting to eight bays gives up the internal DVD
- Maximum internal capacity: 9.6TB on eight 1.2TB SAS drives, or 4.0TB on eight 500GB SATA drives
- Solid state ceiling: 6.4TB on eight 800GB SAS SSDs, or 3.2TB on eight 400GB SATA SSDs
- Interface: 6G SAS and 3G or 6G SATA, run by the embedded Smart Array P410i, which HPE rates for all eight SFF bays
Count the bays before you count the terabytes. The DL360 G7 ships with four 2.5-inch SFF bays and reaches eight only with the SFF hard drive backplane kit — and that conversion costs the internal optical drive, which HPE supports on four-bay models only. There is no 3.5-inch option on this chassis.
Which drive family suits the job?
| Family | Capacities listed | Speed | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAS Enterprise | 146GB to 1.2TB | 10K and 15K rpm | Random and transactional work; three-year warranty class |
| SAS Midline | 500GB and 1TB | 7.2K rpm | Bulk capacity that still wants dual-port SAS |
| SATA Midline | 500GB and 1TB | 7.2K rpm | The cheapest terabytes in the chassis |
| SATA solid state | 100GB to 400GB | MLC, 3G | Boot volumes and read-heavy roles |
Four bays is not many, so the capacity per bay matters more here than it does in a 2U server: a pair of 1.2TB SAS drives carries what eight 300GB drives would, and leaves bays free. If the array is solid state, keep it small — HPE recommends a maximum of four SSDs per Smart Array controller on this server and suggests a second Smart Array for a second set of four.
Choosing the Right DL360 G7 Hard Drive
- Count the bays before you count the terabytes. A four-bay machine needs the backplane kit before a fifth drive has anywhere to go, and that conversion costs the internal optical drive.
- Match the whole storage path. HPE notes that the drive, the controller, the firmware and the backplane should all run at the same transfer rate, or the system negotiates down to the slowest of them.
- SAS for transactional work, SATA midline for bulk. Enterprise SAS carries the higher spindle speeds and the three-year warranty class; midline SATA carries the capacity per pound and a one-year term.
- Solid state on this platform is early-generation. The SATA SSDs are 3G MLC parts of modest capacity, which suits boot and read-heavy volumes rather than primary bulk storage.

DL360 G7 Hard Drives FAQ
How many hard drives does a DL360 G7 hold?
Four hot-plug 2.5-inch SFF drives as standard, and eight at most once the DL360 G6/G7 SFF hard drive backplane kit is fitted to open slots 5 to 8.
Does the DL360 G7 take 3.5-inch drives?
No. This is a 1U chassis and HPE lists only 2.5-inch small form factor bays for it. A 3.5-inch drive has nowhere to seat, and no carrier or adapter changes that.
What is the maximum storage capacity of a DL360 G7?
9.6TB internally on eight 1.2TB SAS drives, or 4.0TB on eight 500GB SATA drives. Solid state configurations reach 6.4TB on 800GB SAS SSDs and 3.2TB on 400GB SATA SSDs.
Will I lose the DVD drive if I fit eight drives?
Yes. HPE supports the integrated optical drive on four-bay models only, and states that no CD or DVD option is available once the server is configured with eight bays. An external USB optical drive is the documented alternative.
How many SSDs should I put behind one controller?
HPE recommends a maximum of four solid state drives per Smart Array controller on this server for best performance, and suggests adding a second Smart Array option for a second set of four.
Do I need HPE drive carriers?
Yes. Drives fit the server in HPE hot-plug carriers matched to the 2.5-inch bays, and the carrier is part of the drive assembly rather than a separate accessory.
