HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9, new and refurbished. The server takes up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors on the Intel C610 chipset for 36 cores in total, and one rule governs every second-CPU order: mixing different processor models is not supported.
DL180 Gen9 Processor Specifications
- Sockets and families: two sockets on the Intel C610 chipset, upgradeable to two processors and 36 cores, taking Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4; HPE supports the v3 to v4 upgrade for processors up to 105W, and not above that
- Ten-core kits: E5-2660v3 at 2.6GHz and E5-2650v3 at 2.3GHz, both 25MB of L3 cache at 105W with a 9.6GT/s QPI link
- Eight-core kits: E5-2640v3 at 2.6GHz and 90W, E5-2630v3 at 2.4GHz and 85W, and the low-power E5-2630Lv3 at 1.8GHz and 55W, each with 20MB of cache
- Six- and four-core kits: E5-2620v3 at 2.4GHz with 15MB and 85W, E5-2609v3 at 1.9GHz with 15MB and 85W, and the four-core E5-2623v3 at 3.0GHz with 10MB and 105W
- Memory ceiling by processor: 1600MT/s on the E5-2609v3, 1866MT/s on the E5-2640v3, E5-2630v3, E5-2620v3, E5-2630Lv3 and E5-2623v3, and 2133MT/s on the E5-2660v3 and E5-2650v3
- Kit contents: every CPU kit comes complete with heatsink and fans, and the -B21 second-processor kits include two additional fans for the upgrade from one processor to two
The processor sets the memory ceiling as firmly as the core count. An E5-2609v3 holds DDR4 at 1600MT/s however fast the DIMMs are rated, while the E5-2660v3 and E5-2650v3 reach 2133MT/s. A second processor must match the first exactly, and it is what makes DIMM slots 9 to 16 usable.
How Much Processor Does the Configuration Need?
| Class | Example | Cores and power | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | E5-2609v3 1.9GHz | 6 cores, 85W | 1600MT/s |
| Base | E5-2630v3 2.4GHz | 8 cores, 85W | 1866MT/s |
| Base, low power | E5-2630Lv3 1.8GHz | 8 cores, 55W | 1866MT/s |
| Base, high clock | E5-2623v3 3.0GHz | 4 cores, 105W | 1866MT/s |
| Performance | E5-2660v3 2.6GHz | 10 cores, 105W | 2133MT/s |
On this platform the processor sets the memory ceiling as firmly as it sets core count, and that is the column people skip. An E5-2609v3 holds DDR4 at 1600MT/s no matter which kits are fitted, so a large memory build under an entry processor spends money the machine cannot use. The E5-2623v3 is the outlier worth knowing: four cores at 3.0GHz for 105W, bought for per-core software licensing rather than throughput.
Choosing the Right DL180 Gen9 Processor
- Both processors must be the same model. Mixing different processor models is not supported, so adding a second CPU means matching the one already fitted.
- A second processor unlocks more than cores. DIMM slots 9 to 16 and the three slots on the second riser only become usable once it is installed.
- Check the wattage before planning a v4 upgrade. HPE supports the E5-2600 v3 to v4 move for processors up to 105W; the 120W v4 parts are outside that path.
- Match the processor to the memory you intend to buy. There is no point pairing 2133MT/s kits with a processor that holds the bus at 1600MT/s.
- The kit brings its own cooling. Every processor option kit includes heatsink and fans, and the second-processor kit adds two fans to the chassis.

DL180 Gen9 Processors FAQ
Which processors does the DL180 Gen9 support?
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4 processors, up to two of them for 36 cores in total. The v3 kits listed for this server run from the four-core E5-2623v3 to the ten-core E5-2660v3.
Can I mix different processors in a DL180 Gen9?
No. HPE does not support mixing different processor models in the same server, so both sockets have to carry the same part.
Can a DL180 Gen9 be upgraded from E5-2600 v3 to v4?
HPE supports the upgrade for processors up to 105W. Above that the v4 parts fall outside the documented upgrade path for this server.
Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes. DIMM slots 9 to 16 only become available with the second processor installed, and the optional second riser's PCIe slots also depend on it.
Do DL180 Gen9 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every CPU kit comes complete with heatsink and fans, and the -B21 kits used for a second processor include two additional system fans.
Which processor gives the best memory speed on this server?
Among the E5-2600 v3 parts, the E5-2660v3 and E5-2650v3 hold memory at 2133MT/s. The E5-2609v3 caps the bus at 1600MT/s regardless of which DIMMs are fitted.
