HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9, new and refurbished. The server ships with two Gigabit ports from the embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i adapter, so port count is as common a reason to add a card here as bandwidth is — and the one thing worth checking first is which riser is in the machine, because FlexibleLOM adapters do not use a PCIe slot.

DL180 Gen9 Networking Specifications

  • Embedded networking: HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i adapter on the Intel I350 controller, two RJ-45 ports over PCI Express 2.0 at two lanes, plus an optional dedicated 1GbE iLO management port
  • Expansion slots: PCI Express 3.0 throughout; the primary riser is either three x8 slots or one x16 plus one x8, and a second riser adds three more slots once a second processor is installed
  • FlexibleLOM slot: carried on a third riser option, which is mandatory for FlexibleLOM cards, works only with processor 1, and accepts one FlexibleLOM per server
  • PCIe cards stocked: the 331T four-port, 332T and 361T two-port Gigabit adapters, and the 530SFP and 560SFP+ over SFP+ with the 530T and 561T over RJ-45 at 10 Gigabit
  • FlexibleLOM adapters stocked: the 331FLR and 366FLR four-port Gigabit, the 561FLR-T 10GbE, and the FlexFabric 534FLR-SFP+ and 533FLR-T
  • 10GbE requirements: HPE documents a minimum of 2GB of server memory per adapter, and direct attach copper cables or fibre transceivers must be bought separately

A FlexibleLOM adapter is not a PCIe card. FLR adapters seat on a dedicated connector carried by one specific riser, which HPE ties to processor 1 and limits to one FlexibleLOM per server. If the machine was built with the three-slot x8 riser or the x16 riser, an FLR card has nowhere to go — confirm the riser before ordering one.

Which Adapter Fits the Slot You Have?

The bottom two rows are the ones to read twice. FlexibleLOM cards seat on a dedicated connector carried by one specific riser, not in a PCIe slot, so a DL180 Gen9 built with the three-slot x8 riser or the x16 riser has nowhere to put one. HPE also ties that riser to processor 1 and allows only one FlexibleLOM per server. If you cannot confirm which riser is fitted, a standard PCIe card is the safer order.

Choosing the Right DL180 Gen9 Network Adapter

  • Count slots against processors. The primary riser gives two or three slots; the three slots on the second riser only work with a second processor installed.
  • Budget memory for 10GbE. HPE calls for at least 2GB of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter fitted.
  • Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
  • Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without the right optics between them.
  • FlexibleLOM is not a PCIe card. Confirm the FlexibleLOM riser is in the server before ordering an FLR adapter, because the enablement hardware that adds it is a separate part.

DL180 Gen9 Networking Adapters FAQ

How many network ports does a DL180 Gen9 have as standard?
Two. The embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i adapter provides two RJ-45 Gigabit ports on the Intel I350 controller. A dedicated iLO management port is a separate option.

Does the DL180 Gen9 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an add-in card. The 530SFP and 560SFP+ cover SFP+, and the 530T and 561T cover 10GBASE-T over RJ-45. FlexFabric 10Gb FlexibleLOM adapters are also listed for this server.

What is a FlexibleLOM and will one fit my server?
A FlexibleLOM adapter uses a dedicated connector rather than a PCIe slot, and that connector sits on one specific riser option. If the server has the three-slot x8 riser or the x16 riser fitted, an FLR card has nowhere to seat.

How many PCIe slots does the DL180 Gen9 have?
Two or three on the primary riser, depending on which riser was chosen, and three more on an optional second riser. The second riser requires a second processor to be installed.

Do 10GbE adapters need extra memory?
HPE documents a minimum of two gigabytes of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter installed, so a pair of cards assumes headroom in the memory configuration.

Are cables included with SFP+ adapters?
No. Direct attach copper cables for short runs, and transceivers plus fibre for longer ones, are purchased separately from the adapter.
