HPE ProLiant BL465c G7 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant BL465c G7, new and refurbished. The blade carries sixteen DIMM slots — eight per processor, four channels each, two slots per channel — and the decision that shapes every upgrade is Registered against Unbuffered, because HPE does not support mixing the two in one server.

BL465c G7 Memory Specifications

  • Type: DDR3 Registered (RDIMM) or Unbuffered (UDIMM), PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) and PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066), including PC3L low-voltage parts
  • Slots: sixteen in total, four channels per processor with two DIMM slots on each; with only one processor installed, half the slots are unavailable
  • Maximum registered: 512GB, using sixteen 32GB quad-rank PC3L-8500 modules at 1066MHz
  • Maximum unbuffered: 64GB, using sixteen 4GB Unbuffered modules at 1333MHz
  • Rank limits: up to eight ranks per channel, and no more than two quad-rank DIMMs per channel
  • Minimum population: two DIMMs per processor, and no DIMM in a bank whose processor is not fitted

Quad-rank capacity costs you clock. The 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 kit is the largest module stocked for this blade and fills all sixteen slots for 256GB, but it holds the memory bus at 1066MHz whether one or two are fitted per channel. Sixteen 8GB dual-rank PC3-10600 kits give 128GB and keep the bus at 1333MHz — capacity and speed pull in opposite directions here.

Registered is the only route past 64GB, and the only type with a low-voltage option stocked here. The platform ceiling and the ceiling you can actually buy are different numbers: 512GB needs 32GB quad-rank modules, and the largest stocked module is 16GB, which fills all sixteen slots for 256GB at 1066MHz. Capacity and clock pull against each other on this blade.

Choosing the Right BL465c G7 Memory

  • Check which type is already fitted before ordering. Registered and Unbuffered cannot be mixed, so converting a blade from one to the other means replacing every module in it.
  • Quad-rank capacity costs clock. The 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 kit holds the bus at 1066MHz at one or two DIMMs per channel, where 8GB dual-rank PC3-10600 kits hold 1333MHz.
  • The slowest DIMM sets the speed for the whole blade. HPE notes that mixing DIMM speeds drops the memory bus to the slowest module installed, even when that module sits on the other processor.
  • Low voltage costs a speed grade. PC3L modules run one speed slower than the equivalent PC3 part, and a blade holding a mix of 1.35V and 1.5V modules runs all of them at 1.5V.
  • Every HPE DDR3 option kit here is a single DIMM. A 128GB build is sixteen 8GB kits, not one boxed set.

BL465c G7 Memory FAQ

What is the maximum memory in a BL465c G7?
512GB with Registered DIMMs, reached with sixteen 32GB quad-rank modules in a two-processor blade. Using the largest module stocked here, the 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 kit, sixteen slots come to 256GB.

How many memory slots does the BL465c G7 have?
Sixteen, arranged as eight per processor across four channels with two slots on each channel. With one processor installed, only eight are available.

Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in a BL465c G7?
No. HPE's population guidelines state plainly that UDIMMs must not be mixed with RDIMMs. Whichever type is fitted is what an upgrade has to match.

Why does my BL465c G7 memory run at 1066MHz?
Quad-rank modules are the usual reason. A 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 DIMM runs the bus at 1066MHz whether one or two are fitted per channel, and a single slower module anywhere in the blade pulls every other module down to its speed.

Does low-voltage PC3L memory run slower?
Yes. The memory bus operates one speed slower when 1.35V modules are installed. If 1.35V and 1.5V modules are mixed, all of them run at 1.5V.

How many DIMMs does a BL465c G7 need as a minimum?
Two per installed processor. HPE also says not to install DIMMs in a bank whose processor is absent, and for virtualisation workloads to populate sockets 1A and 5B on each processor first.
