The tier is the memory decision as well as the core decision. A Bronze 3204 holds DDR4 at 2133MT/s whether two DIMMs are fitted or sixteen, where a Platinum 82xx or Gold 62xx part runs the same modules at 2933MT/s. On a bandwidth-bound workload that gap is worth more than the last few cores, and no memory kit can close it.

This is the decision the Xeon Scalable generation added, and it is easy to get wrong. On earlier blades the memory clock fell as the channels filled; here it does not move with population at all, and is fixed instead by the badge on the processor. A Bronze 3204 holds the memory at 2133MT/s with sixteen DIMMs or two, so on a bandwidth-bound workload the tier is worth more than the last few cores.
Choosing the Right BL460c Gen10 Processor
- Both sockets must carry the same part. Going from one processor to two means a kit identical to the one already fitted, not simply one of the same tier.
- A second processor does three things. It adds cores, it makes the other eight DIMM slots usable, and it brings up I/O expansion slot 2 — which is often the real reason to fit one.
- The two generations are not interchangeable. First and second generation kits take different memory, and HPE lists a separate configure-to-order base blade for the second generation.
- Watch the enclosure fan count above 135W. HPE calls for 10 fans in a c7000 at that wattage and above, which is a decision about the enclosure rather than the blade.
- Speed Select is a boot-time choice. On the 6240Y and 4214Y, fewer selected cores mean a higher operating frequency, and the setting is prompted for at boot only.
