HPE ProLiant BL460c G7 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant BL460c G7, new and refurbished. The blade ships with one processor and is upgradeable to two Intel Xeon 5600 series on the Intel 5520 chipset — and the second socket does more than add cores, because until it is filled six of the twelve DIMM slots stay dark.
BL460c G7 Processor Specifications
- Sockets: two, on the Intel 5520 chipset, with the blade shipping one processor fitted and upgradeable to two
- Family: Intel Xeon 5600 series, where the letter before the model number denotes class — X for high performance and wattage, E for enterprise mainstream, L for lower wattage
- Six-core kits listed: X5670 at 2.93GHz, X5660 at 2.80GHz and X5650 at 2.66GHz, all 95W, plus the 60W L5640 at 2.26GHz
- Four-core kits listed: X5667 at 3.06GHz and 95W, E5640 at 2.66GHz and E5620 at 2.40GHz at 80W, and the 40W L5630 at 2.13GHz
- Cache: 8MB or 12MB of shared level 3 cache depending on the model
- Features: Intel Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost on the models that carry them
- Kit contents: every processor kit listed here is complete with heatsink and fans
The second socket is a memory upgrade as much as a processor upgrade. With one processor installed, only six of the blade's twelve DIMM slots are available, and HPE asks that DIMMs are not fitted against a socket with no processor in it. Filling the second socket is what makes the other half of the memory usable.
Six cores or four, and at what wattage?
| Class | Example kit | Wattage | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| X — high performance | X5670 2.93GHz six-core | 95W | Clock-sensitive work, where the enclosure power budget allows |
| E — enterprise mainstream | E5640 2.66GHz four-core | 80W | General virtualisation and application hosting |
| L — lower wattage | L5640 2.26GHz six-core | 60W | Density, where a full enclosure shares one power subsystem |
On a blade the wattage letter is an enclosure decision rather than a per-server one: a c7000 holds sixteen of these, so the 35 watts between an L5640 and an X5670 becomes 560 watts across a full chassis, drawn from power supplies every blade shares. That is what makes the L5640 the interesting part of this range — six cores and 12MB of cache inside 60 watts, against six faster cores at 95.
Choosing the Right BL460c G7 Processor
- The second processor should match the first. HPE's configure-to-order path picks one processor model per blade and fills the second socket from that same model, pairing an xxxxxx-L21 kit with an xxxxxx-B21 kit; the kits listed here are the standalone -B21 option kits.
- A second processor opens the other six DIMM slots. With one processor installed only half the memory slots are available, and HPE asks that DIMMs are not installed against a socket with no processor in it.
- The processor caps the memory clock. The X5670, X5660, X5650, L5640 and X5667 kits carry a DDR3-1333 rating; the E5640, E5620 and L5630 kits are rated DDR3-1066 and hold the whole bank there however fast the DIMMs are.
- Low-voltage memory needs a 5600 series part. If the blade runs PC3L modules, the processor choice is constrained to that family.
- A few Xeon 5500 series kits are also listed for this blade. The QuickSpecs for the BL460c G7 documents Xeon 5600 series processors only, so check what is already fitted before pairing one of those with an existing CPU.
Complete Your BL460c G7 Build
Processor choice sets the memory clock and opens the second bank of slots — see BL460c G7 memory alongside this page. Also available: BL460c G7 hard drives and storage controllers, or the full BL460c G7 parts listing. The adjacent generations are BL460c G6 processors and BL460c Gen8 processors, another half-height c-Class blade of the same generation is the BL465c G7, and every model is indexed under HPE parts by server model.
BL460c G7 Processors FAQ
Which processors does the BL460c G7 support?
Intel Xeon 5600 series, up to two of them on the Intel 5520 chipset. Six-core kits run from the 95W X5670 down to the 60W L5640, and four-core kits from the 95W X5667 down to the 40W L5630.
Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes. With only one processor installed, six of the twelve DIMM slots are unavailable, so the second CPU is what opens the rest of the memory capacity.
Do BL460c G7 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every processor option kit listed for this blade comes complete with heatsink and fans.
What do the X, E and L letters mean?
They denote performance and wattage class. X is high performance and high wattage, E is enterprise mainstream, and L is lower wattage for density or a constrained enclosure power budget.
Which processor gives the best memory speed?
One rated DDR3-1333: the X5670, X5660, X5650, L5640 and X5667 kits. The E5640, E5620 and L5630 kits are rated DDR3-1066 and hold the memory bus at that speed whatever DIMMs are fitted.
What is the difference between a -B21 and an -L21 processor kit?
The -L21 kits are HPE's factory-integrated option kits, used when a configure-to-order blade is built with two processors. The standalone kits sold for field upgrades are the -B21 part numbers.
