HPE ProLiant SL165z G7 Power Supplies

Genuine HPE Common Slot hot-plug power supplies for the HPE ProLiant SL165z G7, new and refurbished. These supplies live in the z6000 chassis rather than in the tray, and they feed both servers in it — which is why HPE warns that switching off power to a chassis takes down every server in that chassis, not just one.

SL165z G7 Power Supply Specifications

  • Where they fit: the HPE ProLiant z6000 G6 2U chassis, shared by the two SL165z G7 trays it holds, rather than being fitted to a tray
  • Format: HPE Common Slot (CS) hot-plug supplies, the shared form factor used across several ProLiant generations, with efficiency ratings up to 94% across the family
  • Outputs stocked: 460W and 750W Common Slot Gold units, and a 1200W Common Slot Silver unit
  • Input: 100 to 240 VAC at 50 or 60Hz, with a 6ft highline IEC-to-IEC cord shipping standard on the server
  • High line note on the 1200W: it is rated 800W at 100 VAC and 900W at 120 VAC, and delivers its full 1200W only at 200 VAC and above
  • Mixing and cooling: non-matched supplies in one chassis produce errors and failed operation, and three system fans ship with the z6000 chassis, with a redundant fan kit available as an option

Size the chassis, not the server, and watch the input voltage. Both trays in a z6000 draw from the same Common Slot supplies, and HPE cautions that non-matched supplies in one chassis produce errors and failed operation. The 1200W unit delivers 800W at 100 VAC and 900W at 120 VAC; its full rating needs a 200 VAC feed or higher.

Which Common Slot supply suits the chassis?

OutputGrade stockedRated efficiencyNotes
460WGold87.5% at 100 VAC rising to 91.5% at 240 VACA lightly configured pair of trays
750WGold87.5% at 100 VAC rising to 91.5% at 240 VACTwo well populated trays
1200WSilver86% at 100 VAC rising to 89% at 200 VAC and aboveFull 1200W output only on a 200 VAC feed or higher

The 1200W unit is the one to read carefully. On a 120V feed it is a 900W supply and on a 100V feed it is an 800W one, so the headroom it appears to have over a 750W unit only exists on a high line circuit. Sizing here is a question about the whole chassis rather than one server, because both trays draw from the same supplies.

Choosing the Right SL165z G7 Power Supply

  • Read the label on the installed unit first. HPE states that non-matched supplies in one chassis produce errors and failed operation, so the fitted supply is the specification.
  • Size for two trays, not one. Both servers in a z6000 draw from the same supplies, so adding the second tray changes the answer.
  • Check the feed voltage before choosing 1200W. At 100 or 120 VAC that unit delivers 800W or 900W, which a 750W supply nearly matches at a better efficiency grade.
  • Efficiency grade follows the part number. The 460W and 750W units stocked here are Gold rated and the 1200W is Silver; the grade is a property of the supply, not a setting.
  • Option kits are not bare supplies. HPE ships the power supply option kit with an IEC power cable and PDU IEC cables included.

Power draw follows the processors more than anything else here — see SL165z G7 processors and note that a chassis can hold two twelve-core trays. Also available: SL165z G7 memory, hard drives, storage controllers and networking adapters, or the full SL165z G7 parts listing, where the z6000 redundant fan kit and tray blank are also found. SL165z G7 Power Supplies FAQ

Does the SL165z G7 tray have its own power supply?
No. The Common Slot hot-plug supplies are fitted to the z6000 chassis and shared by the two trays it holds, so a supply is a chassis part rather than a server part.

Can I mix power supplies in a z6000 chassis?
No. HPE cautions that only same size supplies are recommended, and that non-matched supplies produce errors and failed operation rather than simply running at the lower rating.

Which wattage does an SL165z G7 chassis need?
It depends on both trays. 460W suits a lightly configured pair, 750W covers well populated trays, and 1200W is for the heaviest configurations - but only on a 200 VAC feed or higher.

Why does my 1200W supply show less than 1200W?
Because of the input voltage. HPE rates that unit at 800W on a 100 VAC feed and 900W at 120 VAC; the full 1200W is only available at 200 VAC and above.

Are these power supplies hot-plug?
Yes. HPE Common Slot power supplies are hot-plug and redundant, so one can be replaced while the chassis keeps running.

How many fans does the z6000 chassis have?
Three system fans ship as standard with the chassis. HPE also lists a z6000 redundant fan kit as an option, and a tray blank that keeps the airflow correct if one tray is removed.
