Count the ports you already have, then count the slots. Four Gigabit ports come built in on two embedded NC362i adapters, so a card is worth buying for 10 Gigabit, fibre, InfiniBand or port count beyond four. Both expansion slots come from an optional riser assembly, and only the x16 faces outward — slot 2 is marked internal only.

Most SL165z G7 trays do not need a Gigabit card at all: four ports are already there, on their own controllers. What the tray is short of is slots. The riser assembly is optional to begin with, and of the two slots it provides only the x16 faces out of the chassis, so a 10 Gigabit adapter, an InfiniBand card and a Smart Array with external ports are all competing for the same position. Settle that contest before ordering any of them.
Choosing the Right SL165z G7 Network Adapter
- Low profile only. Both documented slots are low profile, so a full-height bracket will not fit the tray whatever the card does.
- Budget the memory for 10 Gigabit. HPE calls for a minimum of 2GB of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter fitted.
- Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
- Fibre in a z6000 wants the cable management kit. HPE lists the z6000 cable management kit specifically for chassis running fibre cables.
- Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without the right optics between them.
