HPE ProLiant SL165s G7 Networking Adapters
Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant SL165s G7, new and refurbished. The tray already carries four Gigabit ports on board, from two embedded NC362i dual-port adapters, so an add-in card here is about 10 Gigabit, fibre, or port count — and it is about slots, because there are only two of them and each needs a riser kit.
SL165s G7 Networking Specifications
- Embedded networking: two HPE NC362i Integrated Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapters on Intel 82576 controllers, four RJ-45 ports in total, 10/100/1000BASE-T over Category 5 cabling
- Management port: a dedicated Lights-Out 100 management port is an option kit on this tray rather than a standard fitting, and it is separate from the four data ports
- Expansion: two optional low-profile PCI Express Gen2 slots — an x16 external slot and an x4 slot on an x8 connector that is internal only — each behind its own riser kit
- Gigabit copper stocked: NC112T single port, NC360T dual port, NC365T four-port, NC375T quad port, and the NC373T and NC382T dual-port Multifunction adapters
- Gigabit fibre: the NC373F PCI-E Multifunction 1000SX adapter, for 1000BASE-SX optical runs
- 10 Gigabit stocked: NC522SFP, NC523SFP, NC550SFP and NC552SFP dual-port SFP+ adapters, plus a 10GbE PCIe Gen2 dual-port network interface card
- 10GbE requirements: HPE documents a minimum of 2GB of server memory per NC522SFP adapter, and direct attach copper cables or fibre transceivers are bought separately
Check what you already have, and what slot is left, before buying a card. The SL165s G7 ships with four Gigabit ports from two embedded NC362i adapters. The tray has just two expansion slots, each behind its own riser kit, and the internal x4 slot cannot present a port outside the chassis — so a 10 Gigabit or InfiniBand card realistically wants the external x16 slot.
Do you need an add-in adapter at all?
| What you need | Answer |
|---|---|
| More Gigabit copper ports | NC365T or NC375T quad-port; NC360T for two |
| Gigabit over fibre | NC373F Multifunction 1000SX |
| 10 Gigabit over SFP+ | NC522SFP, NC523SFP, NC550SFP or NC552SFP |
| A low-latency cluster fabric | 4X QDR or 4X DDR InfiniBand, listed on the parts page |
| A management NIC separate from the data ports | The Dedicated Management Port Kit, not an Ethernet card |
Four onboard ports is generous for a tray this size, so the question is rarely whether the ports exist. It is whether a slot is free: the tray has two, a Smart Array will already have claimed one on most storage builds, and the internal x4 slot cannot present a port outside the chassis. That leaves the external x16 slot as the realistic home for a 10 Gigabit or InfiniBand card.
Choosing the Right SL165s G7 Network Adapter
- Know which slot the card has to go in. The internal x4 slot is internal only, so any adapter that needs a cable leaving the tray belongs in the external x16 slot, on the x16 riser kit.
- Budget memory for 10 Gigabit. HPE calls for at least 2GB of server memory per NC522SFP adapter fitted.
- Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
- Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without the right optics between them.
- Weigh the card against the chassis. Four trays share one set of s6500 supplies, so adapters added across every node land on the same power budget.
Complete Your SL165s G7 Build
Ten Gigabit adapters call for memory headroom — see SL165s G7 memory — and they compete with a Smart Array for the same two slots, so read SL165s G7 storage controllers alongside this page. SL165s G7 Networking Adapters FAQ
How many network ports does an SL165s G7 have as standard?
Four. Two embedded HPE NC362i Integrated Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapters provide four RJ-45 ports, built on Intel 82576 controllers.
Does the SL165s G7 have a dedicated management port?
Only as an option. The Lights-Out 100 management functions are embedded, but the dedicated management port itself is a separate option kit rather than a standard fitting.
Does the SL165s G7 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an add-in card. The NC522SFP, NC523SFP, NC550SFP and NC552SFP dual-port adapters are all listed for this server, along with a 10GbE PCIe Gen2 dual-port NIC.
How many expansion slots does an SL165s G7 tray have?
Two, both low profile and both optional: a PCI Express Gen2 x16 external slot and a Gen2 x4 slot on an x8 connector that is internal only. Each needs its own riser kit.
Do 10GbE adapters need extra memory?
HPE documents a minimum of two gigabytes of server memory for each NC522SFP adapter installed, so a pair of cards assumes headroom in the memory configuration.
Are cables included with SFP+ adapters?
No. Direct attach copper cables for short runs, and transceivers plus fibre for longer ones, are bought separately from the adapter.
