Four bays is a hard ceiling, not a starting point. HPE built the DL60 Gen9 only with four large form factor bays — no second cage, no enablement kit and no small form factor version of the chassis. Capacity per drive is the only lever you have, so size the drives for where the server is going rather than where it is.

Those ceilings are what the platform supports, not what sits on this page: the largest 3.5-inch drives listed here are 6TB, which is 24TB across four bays. With no way to add a fifth bay, capacity per drive is the only lever you have, so it pays to buy more capacity per drive than the workload strictly needs rather than plan on adding bays later. Check the front of the chassis for release latches first — a non-hot-plug machine means powering down for a swap.
Choosing the Right DL60 Gen9 Drive
- Confirm hot-plug or non-hot-plug before anything else. The non-hot-plug chassis is SATA only, and a spare for it is worth less because using it costs downtime.
- Check the controller before buying SAS. The embedded B140i is SATA only and reaches four drives; SAS needs an H240 Smart HBA or a Smart Array card in a slot.
- Match the whole storage path. HPE notes that the drive, the controller, the firmware and the server backplane should operate at the same data transfer rate, or the system negotiates down to the slowest of them.
- Weigh the RAID level against four bays. The B140i offers RAID 0, 1, 1+0 and 5, and on a four-bay server the redundancy you choose takes a far bigger share of the total than it would on a twelve-bay one.
- Keep the bays filled. HPE ships factory-built servers with enough hard drive blanks for the bays that are empty, and the LFF blank kit replaces one that has gone missing.

How many drives does a DL60 Gen9 hold?
Four. The server has four large form factor bays and an optical bay, and HPE offered no second drive cage or bay enablement kit for it.
Does the DL60 Gen9 take 2.5-inch drives?
Not directly. HPE built this chassis only with 3.5-inch large form factor bays. A 2.5-inch drive reaches it only when it is supplied in a 3.5-inch SC Converter carrier, as the 15K enterprise drives here are.
What is the maximum storage capacity of a DL60 Gen9?
32.0TB, on four 8TB hot-plug LFF SAS or SATA drives. The non-hot-plug SATA chassis is documented to 16TB on four 4TB drives, and LFF SATA solid state drives reach 15.36TB.
Can I use SAS drives with the embedded controller?
No. The embedded Dynamic Smart Array B140i supports SATA only, up to four drives at 6Gb/s. SAS drives need an H240 Smart Host Bus Adapter or a Smart Array P440 or P441.
What is the difference between the hot-plug and non-hot-plug DL60 Gen9?
The drive cage. The hot-plug chassis takes SAS or SATA drives in SmartDrive carriers and allows a swap with the server running; the non-hot-plug chassis takes SATA drives only and has to be powered down for a drive change.
Can a DL60 Gen9 boot from an M.2 drive?
HPE lists an M.2 cable kit for this server. The note that goes with it is important: the M.2 drive occupies a PCIe slot and runs on the embedded B140i SATA controller only.
