HPE ProLiant DL360e Gen8 Drives

Genuine HPE hot-plug drives for the HPE ProLiant DL360e Gen8, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. This 1U chassis ships as 8 SFF or 4 LFF, both with an optical drive bay, and HPE states plainly that drive cage changes are not supported.

DL360e Gen8 Drive Specifications

  • Bays: 8 SFF (2.5-inch) or 4 LFF (3.5-inch) hot-plug bays, each with an optical drive bay; none ship populated
  • Carriers: Gen8 SmartDrive (SC) carriers with status, activity and "Do Not Remove" indicators; blanks are 666987-B21 (SFF) and 666986-B21 (LFF)
  • Interfaces: 12G SAS, 6G SAS and 6G SATA hard drives and SSDs
  • Documented maximums: 9.6TB SFF SAS (8 × 1.2TB), 8.0TB SFF SATA (8 × 1TB), 16.0TB LFF (4 × 4TB), 6.4TB SFF SSD, 3.2TB LFF SATA SSD
  • The controller sets the drive count: the standard B120i handles up to 6 SATA drives and needs cable kit 675856-B21 past four; SAS or more than six drives needs a B320i riser or a Smart Array card
  • Endurance classes: Write Intensive, Mixed Use, Read Intensive, Mainstream, Value and Light Endurance

The cage you have is the cage you keep. The DL360e Gen8 ships as 8 SFF or 4 LFF, both with an optical drive bay, and HPE states plainly that drive cage changes are not supported. Check which chassis is in the rack before ordering: SFF and LFF SmartDrive carriers are not interchangeable, and the standard B120i controller stops at six SATA drives.

What drives fit the DL360e Gen8?

Enterprise 15K and 10K6G SASSFF146GB to 900GB
Midline 7.2K, 512e on larger parts12G SAS, 6G SAS, 6G SATASFF and LFF500GB to 6TB
Solid state drives12G SASSFF and LFF200GB to 1.92TB
Solid state drives6G SATASFF and LFF80GB to 1.6TB

HPE's Maximum Internal Storage table and its own option list do not quite agree: the table quotes 9.6TB from eight 1.2TB SFF SAS drives and 16.0TB from four 4TB LFF drives, while the option pages carry 1.8TB SFF and 6TB LFF parts. The firm rule sits elsewhere — drive, controller, firmware and backplane should run at the same transfer rate, or the subsystem negotiates down.

Choosing the Right DL360e Gen8 Drives

  • Check which chassis you have first. Carriers are not interchangeable and the cage cannot be swapped, so an 8 SFF server needs 2.5-inch SC drives and a 4 LFF server 3.5-inch SC drives.
  • Count past four before you buy. On the standard B120i, going beyond four SATA drives requires cable kit 675856-B21, and beyond six or to SAS needs a different controller.
  • Match endurance to write load — see the WI, MU and RI comparison. With four or eight bays, a larger SSD beats an extra spindle.
  • Watch the 512e parts: several midline drives are 512e rather than 512n, and our note on what 512e drives are explains the difference.
  • Keep each array uniform. Background: SAS versus SATA and the SmartDrive carrier history.

DL360e Gen8 Drives FAQ

How many drives does the HPE ProLiant DL360e Gen8 hold?
Eight SFF 2.5-inch bays or four LFF 3.5-inch bays, depending on the chassis, and both versions include an optical drive bay. No hard drives ship standard, and pre-configured models arrive with hard drive blanks already fitted.

Can I convert a DL360e Gen8 from 4 LFF to 8 SFF?
No. The QuickSpecs state that drive cage changes are not supported. HPE offers both an 8 SFF and a 4 LFF configure-to-order chassis, and the one you bought is the one you keep.

What is the maximum internal storage of the DL360e Gen8?
HPE quotes 9.6TB from eight 1.2TB SFF SAS drives, 8.0TB from eight 1TB SFF SATA drives, and 16.0TB from four 4TB LFF drives. For solid state it quotes 6.4TB from eight 800GB SFF SSDs and 3.2TB from four 800GB LFF SATA SSDs.

What carrier do DL360e Gen8 drives use?
The Gen8 SmartDrive (SC) carrier. HPE re-designed both the 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hot-plug carriers for Gen8 with status and activity indicators plus a Do Not Remove caution indicator, so a drive must be on an SC carrier to seat in this backplane.

Can the DL360e Gen8 use 12G SAS drives?
Yes - 12G SAS hard drives and SSDs are listed for this server. Bear in mind that the embedded Dynamic Smart Array controllers run 6Gb/s links, and HPE notes the storage subsystem negotiates down to whichever of drive, controller, firmware or backplane is slowest.

Do DL360e Gen8 drives come with a warranty?
HPE states that hard drives carry either a one year or three year warranty depending on the drive, and points to the specific hard drive QuickSpecs for detail. In this document the 7.2K midline parts are generally the one-year models.
