HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 Storage Controllers

Genuine HPE Smart Array controllers, Smart HBAs and cache modules for the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9, new and refurbished. Storage starts on the embedded Dynamic Smart Array B140i, which HPE documents as SATA only — SAS drives need an H240ar, a P440ar or a plug-in card.

DL360 Gen9 Storage Controller Specifications

  • Embedded B140i: SATA only, ten SAS/SATA links at a 6Gb/s peak, up to 10 internal drives, RAID 0, 1, 10 and 5 — no expander support, no Secure Encryption, no SmartCache
  • Flexible "ar" controllers: the H240ar Smart HBA and the Smart Array P440ar/2GB FBWC — 12Gb, two internal ports, up to 8 internal drives, neither consuming a PCIe slot
  • Plug-in Smart Array cards: the P440/4GB FBWC (one internal port, one PCIe slot, ships with the Smart Storage Battery), the P840/4GB and P840ar/2GB for 10SFF, and the external P441/4GB and P841/4GB
  • Cache and protection: 2GB or 4GB flash-backed write cache backed by the optional HPE Smart Storage Battery; SmartCache is licensed separately, standard with the P840
  • Cabling: a SAS cable kit is part of the order — 766209-B21/775927-B21 on SFF, 766211-B21/775929-B21 on LFF, 843234-B21 for the P840ar

"ar" means it costs you no PCIe slot. The H240ar Smart Host Bus Adapter and the Smart Array P440ar/2GB seat in a dedicated connector and support up to 8 internal SAS/SATA drives without consuming an expansion slot. A P440, P441 or P841 takes one of just three PCIe 3.0 slots — and the third of those needs the second processor installed.

Which storage controller does the DL360 Gen9 use?

ControllerPorts and slot costCacheBest for
Dynamic Smart Array B140i (embedded)SATA only, up to 10 drivesNoneSATA builds and M.2, software RAID
H240ar Smart Host Bus Adapter2 internal 12Gb, no PCIe slotNoneSAS pass-through, HBA mode

Smart Array P4401 internal 12Gb, one PCIe slot4GB FBWC8 drives with a larger cache
Smart Array P840 / P840ar2 internal 12Gb4GB / 2GB FBWC10SFF backplanes

The "ar" suffix decides most orders on a 1U box: an H240ar or P440ar seats in a dedicated connector and leaves all three PCIe 3.0 slots free, while a P440, P441 or P841 takes one of them. See our guide to HPE Flexible Smart Array controllers covers how the families differ.

Choosing the Right DL360 Gen9 Storage Controller

  • Settle SATA or SAS, then count slots. The B140i covers SATA and software RAID; SAS means an H240ar, a P440ar or a plug-in card — and there are only three PCIe slots, the third needing the second processor.
  • Cabling is part of the order. SFF and LFF cable kits are different part numbers, and the P840ar has its own.
  • 10SFF changes the answer. HPE pairs that backplane with the P840 SAS card and cable kit 766205-B21 — controller, 4GB cache and Smart Storage Battery together.
  • Refurbished cards and cache modules are a low-risk buy — tested before shipping, and the usual way off the embedded controller.

DL360 Gen9 Storage Controllers FAQ

What RAID controller does the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 use?
It depends on the model. Entry models carry the embedded HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i or the H240ar Smart Host Bus Adapter; Base and Performance models carry the HPE Flexible Smart Array P440ar with 2GB of flash-backed write cache.

Does the DL360 Gen9 B140i support SAS drives?
No. The QuickSpecs list the B140i's storage protocol support as SATA, with RAID 0, 1, 10 and 5 on SATA and up to 10 internal drives. For SAS drives you need an H240ar, a P440ar or a plug-in Smart Array card, plus the matching cable kit.

Which Smart Array cards can I add to a DL360 Gen9?
The QuickSpecs list the P440ar/2GB and P440/4GB, the P840/4GB and P840ar/2GB, and the external-port P441/4GB and P841/4GB, alongside the H240ar, H240 and H241 Smart Host Bus Adapters. A P440ar variant, 726740-B21, exists specifically for two-GPU configurations.

Does a DL360 Gen9 storage controller need a cable kit?
Usually, and the kit differs by chassis. HPE lists 766209-B21 for an SFF P440ar or H240ar, 775927-B21 for an SFF P440 or H240, 766211-B21 and 775929-B21 for the LFF equivalents, 843234-B21 for the P840ar, and embedded SATA cables 766207-B21 and 766213-B21.

What does the HPE Smart Storage Battery do on a DL360 Gen9?
It backs the flash-backed write cache on the Smart Array controllers, so cached writes survive a power loss. It is an optional internal component, and the P440/4GB and the P840 card with cable kit 766205-B21 are both listed as including one.

Can the DL360 Gen9 boot in Legacy BIOS mode?
Gen9 defaults to UEFI and can be configured for Legacy BIOS boot. HPE notes that on E5-2600 v3 Entry models the embedded B140i operates in UEFI mode only, so Legacy support needs an additional controller, and that selecting the Legacy FIO setting means the B140i can no longer be the primary controller.
