HPE ProLiant BL490c G7 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant BL490c G7, new and refurbished. This is the blade HPE built for memory capacity — eighteen DIMM slots, nine per processor, three channels of three — and the first decision is Registered against Unbuffered, because HPE's population rules forbid running the two together.

BL490c G7 Memory Specifications

  • Type: DDR3 Registered (RDIMM) or Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM), PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) and PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066), including PC3L low-voltage parts
  • Slots: eighteen in total — three channels per processor, three DIMM slots on each channel; with one processor fitted, only nine are available
  • Documented maximum: 384GB Registered, from twelve 32GB quad-rank PC3L-8500 modules at two DIMMs per channel, or 48GB Unbuffered from twelve 4GB modules
  • Largest module stocked here: 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500, which holds every channel to two DIMMs and so fills twelve slots for 192GB
  • Rank limits: two quad-rank DIMMs per channel, and fitting any quad-rank module holds every channel in the blade to two; Unbuffered modules are also two per channel, third slot empty
  • Protection: Advanced ECC, Memory Mirroring and Lock-Step on all models, with Online Spare on Xeon 5600 series processors — and every DDR3 option kit for this blade is a single DIMM

Registered and Unbuffered cannot run together, and the ceilings are nothing alike. HPE documents 384GB Registered against 48GB Unbuffered in the same eighteen slots. Check what is fitted before ordering a single kit — converting a blade from one type to the other means replacing every module in it.

How far does each stocked DIMM take this blade?

ModuleSlots it can fillMaximumSpeed when full
8GB dual-rank PC3-10600 RDIMM18144GB800MHz at three DIMMs per channel
16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 RDIMM12192GB800MHz at two DIMMs per channel
4GB dual-rank PC3-10600 UDIMM1248GB1066MHz at two DIMMs per channel

Capacity and clock pull against each other here, and the quad-rank module is where they part company. It is the only stocked route past 144GB, but it closes the third slot in every channel and falls from 1066MHz to 800MHz once two share one. Dual-rank 8GB modules hold 1333MHz at one or two per channel, so 96GB from twelve 8GB modules runs faster than the same 96GB from six 16GB quad-rank modules.

Choosing the Right BL490c G7 Memory

  • Registered and Unbuffered do not mix. HPE's population guidelines say so plainly, so whichever type is fitted today is what an upgrade has to match; converting a blade means replacing every module in it.
  • A second processor opens the other nine slots. DIMMs must not be installed against an empty socket, so on a blade bought for memory, half the capacity sits behind the second CPU.
  • PC3L needs a Xeon 5600 series processor. Low-voltage modules are supported only with that family, and mixing 1.35V and 1.5V parts runs the whole set at 1.5V.
  • Mixing speeds costs the whole bus. The memory bus falls to the slowest module in the blade, even when that module is on the other processor.
  • Mirroring and Lock-Step want channel 3 empty. Both modes leave the third channel unpopulated and populate channels 1 and 2 identically, which changes the arithmetic behind any capacity target.

A second processor is what makes the other nine slots usable — see BL490c G7 processors before settling on a capacity target. BL490c G7 Memory FAQ

How many memory slots does the BL490c G7 have?
Eighteen, nine per processor. Each processor has three memory channels with three DIMM slots on each, and with only one processor installed just nine slots are available.

What is the maximum memory in a BL490c G7?
HPE documents 384GB with Registered DIMMs, reached with twelve 32GB quad-rank PC3L-8500 modules at two per channel, and 48GB with Unbuffered DIMMs. The largest module stocked here is 16GB, which reaches 192GB across twelve slots.

Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in a BL490c G7?
No. HPE's population guidelines say not to mix UDIMMs with RDIMMs, so an upgrade has to match what is already fitted, and converting from one type to the other means replacing every module.

Why can I only use twelve of the eighteen slots?
Quad-rank and Unbuffered modules are both limited to two per channel, and installing any quad-rank DIMM limits every channel in the blade to two. Only single-rank and dual-rank Registered modules fill all three slots in a channel.

Can I use PC3L low-voltage memory in this blade?
Only with Intel Xeon 5600 series processors. If low-voltage and standard-voltage modules end up mixed, HPE notes that all of them run at 1.5V.

Do HPE memory kits for this blade contain more than one DIMM?
No. Every DDR3 option kit listed for this server blade is a single DIMM, so filling twelve slots means twelve kits.
