Registered is the only way past 24GB in a node, and the stocked route to the 96GB ceiling is six 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 modules, which run the bank at 1066MHz rather than 1333MHz. Unbuffered earns its place only where a node already runs it and is being topped up, since converting a node from one type to the other means replacing all six modules in it.

Choosing the Right BL2x220c G7 Memory

  • Count slots per node, not per blade. Six slots is one node, a fitted blade takes twelve modules, and every HPE DDR3 option kit here is a single DIMM rather than a matched pair.
  • Registered and Unbuffered cannot be mixed. Check which type a node already runs, because the wrong technology stops the node rather than simply slowing it.
  • One DIMM per channel means no population step-down. Filling all six slots costs no clock speed; the rating comes from the module and the processor, and mixing DIMM speeds is allowed with the processor's limit overriding the modules.
  • 95W processors force a full node. All six slots must be populated on each node when 95W parts are fitted, where 80W, 60W and 40W parts need a minimum of four.
  • Low-voltage PC3L kits need Xeon 5600 series processors. Mixing 1.35V and 1.5V modules is permitted, but the whole set then runs at 1.5V and the saving is lost.
