HPE ProLiant DL80 Gen9 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL80 Gen9, new and refurbished. The server takes up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors on the Intel C610 chipset and is documented as upgradeable to two processors and 28 cores, and on this 2U chassis the second socket does considerably more than add cores.

A second processor opens the chassis, not just the core count. DIMM slots 5 to 8, PCI Express slots 6 and 7 and the optional riser are all documented against processor 2, so a single-processor DL80 Gen9 runs at half its 256GB ceiling and three of its five motherboard slots.

Half the memory, two of the five motherboard slots and the whole riser are documented against processor 2, so a single-processor DL80 Gen9 runs at half its memory ceiling and three fifths of its slot count. That makes the second CPU the cheapest way to open up the chassis rather than simply a performance upgrade. The catch is that both sockets must carry the same model, so it is a match to what is fitted rather than a free choice.
Choosing the Right DL80 Gen9 Processor
- Both processors must be the same model. Mixing different processor models is not supported, so adding a second CPU means matching the one already fitted.
- Buy the second processor for the slots and the memory, not just the cores. It is what makes DIMMs 5 to 8, PCIe slots 6 and 7 and the riser usable.
- The processor sets the memory clock. Entry parts hold the bus at 1600MT/s, base parts at 1866MT/s and the E5-2650v3, E5-2660v3 and E5-2650Lv3 at 2133MT/s.
- A v3 to v4 upgrade drags the memory with it. DDR4-2133 kits are documented for v3 and DDR4-2400 for v4, so changing family means changing DIMMs.
- The kit brings its own cooling. Every processor option kit includes heatsink and fans, and the -B21 kit carries two additional fans.
