HPE ProLiant DL80 Gen9 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant DL80 Gen9, new and refurbished. The server ships with two Gigabit ports from the embedded Dual Port 361i adapter, and while this 2U chassis holds five motherboard slots, only three answer to processor 1 — so the slot count you have depends on how many processors are fitted.

DL80 Gen9 Networking Specifications

  • Embedded networking: the HPE Embedded Dual Port 361i Adapter on the Intel I350 Powerville controller, two RJ-45 ports at 10/100/1000 over PCI Express 2.0 at two lanes
  • Motherboard slots: five low profile PCI Express 3.0 slots — slots 1, 3 and 4 against processor 1, slots 6 and 7 against processor 2 — so a single-processor server has three
  • The riser choice: one optional riser and only one — the FlexibleLOM riser (a low profile slot plus the FlexibleLOM connector), the full-height half-length riser (two FHHL slots) or the GPU enablement kit (one full-height full-length slot); each ships with a fan
  • FlexibleLOM rules: the FlexibleLOM riser is mandatory for installing a FlexibleLOM, and only one FlexibleLOM can be added to the server
  • PCIe cards stocked: the 331T four-port and the 332T and 361T two-port Gigabit adapters, with the 530SFP and 560SFP+ over SFP+ and the 530T and 561T over RJ-45 at 10 Gigabit
  • 10GbE requirements: HPE documents a minimum of 2GB of server memory per adapter, and direct attach copper cables or fibre transceivers are bought separately

Every motherboard slot in this server is low profile, and only one riser goes in. A full-height card needs the full-height half-length riser, and choosing it rules out both the FlexibleLOM connector and the GPU riser. With one CPU fitted there are three slots rather than five, and no riser at all.

Do You Have a Slot for the Card You Want?

What you needCardWhere it goes
More Gigabit copper ports331T four-port, 332T or 361T two-portAny low profile PCIe 3.0 slot
10 Gigabit over SFP+530SFP or 560SFP+Any low profile PCIe 3.0 slot
10 Gigabit over RJ-45530T or 561TAny low profile PCIe 3.0 slot
Ports without spending a PCIe slot331FLR or 366FLR Gigabit; 533FLR-T, 534FLR-SFP+, 560FLR-SFP+ or 561FLR-T at 10 GigabitThe FlexibleLOM connector on its riser

Two things make that table narrower than it looks. Every motherboard slot here is low profile, so a full-height card needs the full-height half-length riser — and choosing that riser rules out the FlexibleLOM connector and the GPU riser, because only one riser goes in. The other constraint is the processor count: with one CPU there are three slots rather than five, a storage controller usually claims one, and the riser cannot be populated at all.

Choosing the Right DL80 Gen9 Network Adapter

  • Count the processors before the slots. Slots 6 and 7 belong to processor 2 and are dead in a single-processor server.
  • Identify the riser before ordering an FLR card. The FlexibleLOM riser is mandatory for a FlexibleLOM; with the full-height or GPU riser fitted there is no connector to seat one in.
  • Check the card height. All five motherboard slots are low profile, so a full-height adapter belongs on the riser or not at all.
  • Budget memory for 10GbE. HPE calls for at least 2GB of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter fitted, against a ceiling of 256GB.
  • Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ cards ship bare, and one will not reach a 10GBASE-T switch port without the right optics between them.

DL80 Gen9 Networking Adapters FAQ

How many network ports does a DL80 Gen9 have as standard?
Two. The HPE Embedded Dual Port 361i Adapter provides two RJ-45 Gigabit ports on the Intel I350 controller, connected over PCI Express 2.0 at two lanes.

How many PCIe slots does a DL80 Gen9 have?
Five low profile PCI Express 3.0 slots, but slots 6 and 7 belong to processor 2. A single-processor server has three usable slots, plus one optional riser that also needs the second processor.

Does the DL80 Gen9 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an add-in card. The 530SFP and 560SFP+ cover SFP+ and the 530T and 561T cover 10GBASE-T over RJ-45, with 10Gb FlexibleLOM adapters listed as well.

Can I fit a full-height network card in a DL80 Gen9?
Only on a riser. Every motherboard slot here is low profile; the full-height half-length riser adds two full-height slots, and the GPU enablement kit adds one full-height full-length slot.

What is a FlexibleLOM and will one fit my DL80 Gen9?
A FlexibleLOM uses a dedicated connector instead of a PCIe slot, and that connector sits on the FlexibleLOM riser. Only one riser can be selected, so a server built with the full-height or GPU riser has nowhere to seat one.

Do 10GbE adapters need extra memory?
HPE documents a minimum of two gigabytes of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter installed, so a pair of cards assumes headroom in a 256GB ceiling.
