HPE ProLiant DL384 Gen12 Parts

The HPE ProLiant Compute DL384 Gen12 is a 2U air-cooled rack server built around the NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip — one superchip, or two as GH200 NVL2 — for large language model inference and memory-hungry work such as large-scale simulation, EDA and weather forecasting. It is unlike any other ProLiant we stock parts for: the Arm CPU, the LPDDR5X and the HBM3e are all part of the superchip, HPE sells the server only as a completely assembled system, and there are no processor, memory or RAID controller option kits. What can be bought for it afterwards is what this page lists: genuine HPE, new and refurbished, tested before it ships.

DL384 Gen12 Platform at a Glance

  • Form factor: 2U standard 19-inch rack, air cooled; 789 mm deep, 448 mm wide, 87.5 mm high; up to 26 kg with one superchip, 31 kg with two
  • Superchip: one NVIDIA GH200 with 72 Arm Neoverse V2 cores, 480GB of LPDDR5X and 144GB of HBM3e, or two as GH200 NVL2 with 144 cores, 960GB of LPDDR5X and 288GB of HBM3e
  • Memory: integrated into the superchip — no DIMM slots and no memory option kits; the memory installed is the memory the server keeps
  • Drives: EDSFF Gen5 x4 NVMe bays, two per superchip as standard with a factory option of four, up to eight on an NVL2, plus up to two internal M.2 NVMe devices; no hardware RAID and no hot-plug
  • Expansion: full height half length x16 Gen5 PCIe slots, two per superchip in HPE's recommended configuration, or one PCIe plus one OCP 3.0 x16 per superchip; the counts are set at the factory
  • Networking: the standard rear interfaces list a dedicated 1Gb iLO port and no data-network port, so connectivity comes from the Mellanox Ethernet, InfiniBand and Bluefield DPU adapters listed below
  • Power: up to four 1800W-2200W Flex Slot Titanium hot-plug supplies at 200 to 240 VAC — two to four on a single superchip, four required on NVL2; 3048 W maximum heat dissipation fully populated
  • Management: HPE iLO 6 with a dedicated 1Gb port and front service port, UEFI boot mode only with no legacy mode, HPE silicon root of trust
  • Operating systems: RHEL 9.4, Ubuntu 24.04 and SLES 15 SP5 QU1 are HPE's initial certification plans; three-year parts, labor and onsite warranty

This server has no memory, processor or RAID controller upgrades. The Arm CPU, the LPDDR5X and the HBM3e are all part of the NVIDIA GH200 superchip, HPE sells the DL384 Gen12 only as a completely assembled system, and it offers no field upgrade kit for the number of superchips, drive bays, PCIe or OCP slots. What can be bought for it afterwards is exactly what this page lists: EDSFF and M.2 NVMe drives, network and fabric adapters, and the Flex Slot Titanium power supply.

Specifications on this page are taken from the HPE ProLiant Compute DL384 Gen12 QuickSpecs, Version 16.

What can be changed on a DL384 Gen12, and what cannot?

ComponentField option?What HPE documents
Superchip count, CPU cores, LPDDR5X and HBM3eNoPart of the GH200; sold only as a completely assembled system
Number of drive bays, PCIe and OCP slotsNoSet at the factory; no field upgrade kits exist
EDSFF and M.2 NVMe drivesYesMay be upgraded in the field, within the bays the server was built with
Ethernet, InfiniBand and Bluefield adaptersYesUp to four other NIC and fabric adapters per server; Bluefield DPUs have their own counts
Power suppliesYesTwo to four hot-plug Flex Slot Titanium supplies, all the same part
Hardware RAID controllerNot supportedBoot is set in HPE iLO from M.2 NVMe, EDSFF NVMe or PXE

The top of that table is why this model has three component pages rather than the usual six: the silicon that fills the memory and processor pages on an x86 ProLiant is inside the GH200 here and leaves the factory fixed. The bottom is the shopping list.

DL384 Gen12 Parts FAQ

Can I upgrade the memory in a DL384 Gen12?
No. The LPDDR5X and HBM3e are part of the NVIDIA GH200 superchip - 480GB of LPDDR5X and 144GB of HBM3e per superchip, doubled on the NVL2 - and HPE lists no memory option kit for this server. It is sold only as a completely assembled system, and the memory it ships with is the memory it keeps.

Can I add a second GH200 superchip to a single-superchip DL384 Gen12 later?
No. HPE states that there are no field upgrade kits for this server and does not support changes to the number of superchips, drives, PCIe or OCP slots outside its factory. Single and dual configurations are built as ordered.

What processor does the DL384 Gen12 use?
The Arm CPU inside the NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip: 72 Arm Neoverse V2 cores per superchip at a 3.1GHz base frequency, 144 cores on a GH200 NVL2. There is no socketed processor and no processor option kit, which is why this model has no processors page.

What parts can I actually buy for a DL384 Gen12?
EDSFF E3.S and M.2 NVMe solid state drives, Ethernet, InfiniBand and Bluefield DPU adapters, and the 1800W-2200W Flex Slot Titanium power supply. Those are the option kits HPE lists for this server, and they are the three categories on this page.

Does the DL384 Gen12 support hardware RAID?
No. HPE states that hardware RAID controllers are not supported in this product generation, and that the M.2 devices are not in hardware RAID. Boot is set in HPE iLO from M.2 NVMe, EDSFF NVMe or PXE, and any drive redundancy is handled in software.

How many drives fit in a DL384 Gen12?
Two EDSFF NVMe drives per superchip as standard, with a factory-set option of four per superchip, up to eight in a dual-superchip NVL2 configuration, plus up to two internal M.2 devices. HPE recommends two EDSFF drives per superchip, and no drives ship as standard.
