At 3 DIMMs per channel an E5-2600 v2 server drops 1866 parts to 1333 and low-voltage 1600 RDIMMs to 800, while an E5-2600 server drops 1600 parts to 1333 and 1333 low-voltage parts to 1066. Read the last column against your processor generation; the step is not the same one. On E5-2600 v2 a low-voltage DDR3-1600 RDIMM loses half its rated speed at 3 DIMMs per channel; on E5-2600 the equivalent part only drops 1333 to 1066, and the 32GB LRDIMM lands on 1066 rather than 1333. Choosing the Right DL380p Gen8 Memory

  • The processor caps the speed. HPE rates the E5-2697 v2 down to the E5-2637 v2 at 1866/1600MHz, the Base v2 parts at 1600MHz and the Entry v2 parts at 1333MHz. The E5-2600 equivalents sit a tier lower, bottoming out at 1066MHz.

  • Mixing rules: 1.35V and 1.5V RDIMMs may be mixed but all run at the higher voltage, and different speeds may be mixed with the server picking a common optimal speed.

How much RAM does the HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 support?
The QuickSpecs give three ceilings by memory type: 768GB from 24 x 32GB LRDIMMs at 1066MHz, 384GB from 24 x 16GB RDIMMs at 1333MHz, and 128GB from 16 x 8GB UDIMMs at 1600MHz. UDIMM population is capped at 16 DIMMs whatever the slot count.

How many DIMM slots does the DL380p Gen8 have?
Twenty-four - twelve per processor, across four memory channels per processor at three DIMMs per channel. If only one processor is installed, only half the slots are available.

What is the fastest memory the DL380p Gen8 will run?
DDR3-1866, and only with an E5-2600 v2 Performance processor. HPE rates the E5-2697 v2 through the E5-2637 v2 at 1866/1600MHz. On the earlier E5-2600 series the top rating is 1600MHz, and the Entry parts cap at 1066MHz.

Why does my DL380p Gen8 memory run slower when I fill every slot?
Because the third DIMM on a channel forces a step-down, and how far depends on the processor generation. With E5-2600 v2, 1866 parts drop to 1333 and low-voltage 1600 RDIMMs drop to 800. With E5-2600, 1600 parts drop to 1333 with an RBSU setting and 1333 low-voltage parts drop to 1066.

Can I use E5-2600 memory kits with E5-2600 v2 processors?
Check the group the kit came from. This QuickSpecs lists a separate set of RDIMM, UDIMM and LRDIMM part numbers under each processor family. DIMMs of different speeds may be mixed and the server picks a common optimal speed, but RDIMM, LRDIMM and UDIMM cannot be mixed.

Can I use memory from an older HPE server in the DL380p Gen8?
No. The QuickSpecs state that memory from previous generation servers is not qualified or warranted with this server, and that HPE SmartMemory is required to realize the documented performance and functionality.
