Before you order, check what is already in the slots. HPE does not support mixing x4 and x8 memory or 3DS and non-3DS memory in the DL325 Gen12, and the 32GB kit is the only x8 module while the 256GB kit is the only 3DS module. A server built on either of those two kits can only be expanded with more of the same; the 64GB, 96GB and 128GB dual-rank x4 kits are the ones that share a server.

How much memory can the DL325 Gen12 hold?

Twelve slots is the sweet spot on this server. Twelve DIMMs of one capacity fill every channel once, keep the 1DPC speed and reach 3TB with the 256GB kit, which is the same total as 24 × 128GB at the slower 2DPC speed. Go past twelve only when you need more than the 1DPC ceiling allows, and be aware that the 256GB 3DS kit is marked not supported in several chassis and processor-wattage combinations in HPE's memory thermal matrix.

Choosing the Right DL325 Gen12 Memory

• Do not mix x4 and x8 kits. HPE states the mixing is not supported. The 32GB kit is the only x8 module listed, so a server started on 32GB modules stays on 32GB modules, and everything from 64GB up is x4.
• Do not mix 3DS and non-3DS. The 256GB kit is a 3DS module and cannot share the server with the 32GB to 128GB kits. Moving to 256GB is a full replacement.
• Stick to the allowed counts. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 or 24 DIMMs per socket; there is no valid 14- or 18-DIMM configuration.
• The second DIMM in a channel costs speed. 16, 20 or 24 DIMMs run at the 2DPC speed; 1 to 12 run at 1DPC. Fill channels before you double them.
• Large kits change the cooling. HPE requires the Performance fan kit with 96GB, 128GB or 256GB DIMMs on processors of 240W and below, where the standard fan would otherwise do.
• Order the -B21 kit. The -B21 part numbers on this page are the standalone memory SKUs; the matching -F21 numbers are for factory-integrated orders only.
