HPE ProLiant DL325 Gen12 Drives
Genuine HPE hot-plug drives for the HPE ProLiant DL325 Gen12, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. This server comes in four chassis and three drive form factors — SFF, LFF and EDSFF E3.S — so the first question is never capacity but which bays your chassis actually has, and which carrier they take.
DL325 Gen12 Drive Specifications

- Carriers: SFF drives on the Basic Carrier (BC), LFF drives on the Low Profile carrier (LP/LPC), E3.S drives in the EC1 EDSFF carrier
- SFF SSD listed: SATA 6G Read Intensive to 7.68TB and Mixed Use to 3.84TB, SAS 12G Value SAS to 7.68TB and SAS 24G to 15.36TB, and PCIe Gen4 U.3 NVMe Read Intensive to 15.36TB and Mixed Use to 6.4TB, with self-encrypting and FIPS 140-3 variants
- EDSFF E3.S SSD listed: PCIe Gen4 Very Read Optimized to 30.72TB, PCIe Gen5 Read Intensive from 1.92TB to 30.72TB and Mixed Use from 1.6TB to 12.8TB, with self-encrypting and FIPS 140-3 variants
- Hard drives listed: LFF 7.2K Business Critical SAS 12G from 4TB to 26TB and SATA 6G from 1TB to 26TB, SFF 10K Mission Critical SAS 12G from 300GB to 2.4TB, plus FIPS 140-2 SFF variants
- HPE's maximum storage table: 96TB LFF SAS or SATA HDD as 4 × 24TB, 153.6TB SFF SAS SSD or U.3 NVMe as 10 × 15.36TB, 76.8TB SFF SATA SSD, and 614.4TB EDSFF E3.S NVMe as 20 × 30.72TB
Match the carrier to the chassis before you match the capacity. The DL325 Gen12 uses Basic Carrier SFF bays, Low Profile LFF bays and EC1 EDSFF E3.S bays, and no drive from one fits another. Only the SFF/EDSFF chassis mixes SFF and E3.S, and it does so with separate 2SFF and 4EDSFF stacking backplane kits — so a 20-drive E3.S fill and a 10-drive SFF fill are different backplane orders in the same box.
Which drives fit which DL325 Gen12 chassis?
| Chassis | Bays | Drive types | Connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8SFF | 8 SFF + optional 2SFF | SATA and SAS SSD/HDD, U.3 NVMe SSD | SATA direct attach, x4 NVMe direct attach, or an OCP or PCIe controller |
| 4LFF | 4 LFF | SATA and SAS 7.2K HDD, LFF SSD | SATA direct attach or an OCP controller |
| SFF/EDSFF | up to 10 SFF or 20 E3.S 1T, mixed | All SFF types and E3.S NVMe | x2 or x4 NVMe direct attach, OCP or PCIe controller, or MR932i-p |
| GPU | 8 E3.S 1T or 4 SFF | SFF or E3.S NVMe, SAS/SATA on a controller | x4 NVMe direct attach or a controller; SATA AHCI mode not supported |
The carrier decides fit before the interface does. An SFF drive here is a Basic Carrier drive, an LFF drive a Low Profile drive, and an E3.S drive an EC1 drive; none of the three goes in another's bay. On the SFF/EDSFF chassis the 2SFF and 4EDSFF stacking backplane kits can be combined, which is how a server ends up with a handful of SAS drives beside a block of E3.S NVMe.
Choosing the Right DL325 Gen12 Drive
- Buy for the bays you have. An E3.S drive needs a 4EDSFF backplane, a U.3 NVMe drive needs a Tri-Mode U.3 or x4 NVMe backplane, and the 4LFF chassis takes LFF only.
- Match endurance to the write load. Read Intensive and Very Read Optimized parts carry the capacity, Mixed Use parts the endurance. HPE lists Mixed Use to 6.4TB in U.3 and 12.8TB in E3.S; everything larger is Read Intensive or Very Read Optimized.
- Do not mix drive types in one array. Keep interface, endurance class and media the same within a RAID set, however many drive types the chassis will physically hold.
- Check the connection path for NVMe. HPE's storage configurations pair NVMe bays with direct-attach cable kits, an OCP or PCIe controller, or the MR932i-p; the drive alone does not decide whether it is direct attach or RAID.
- Encrypted and FIPS drives are separate parts. Self-encrypting and FIPS 140-3 SSDs and FIPS 140-2 HDDs are listed as their own part numbers; a standard drive does not become one.

DL325 Gen12 Drives FAQ
How many drives does a DL325 Gen12 hold?
Up to 20 E3.S 1T drives or 10 SFF drives in the SFF/EDSFF chassis, with mixing allowed. The 8SFF chassis holds eight SFF drives plus an optional 2SFF bay, the 4LFF chassis four LFF drives, and the GPU chassis 8 E3.S or 4 SFF drives.
What is the maximum storage in a DL325 Gen12?
HPE's table gives 614.4TB as 20 x 30.72TB EDSFF E3.S NVMe SSDs, 153.6TB as 10 x 15.36TB SFF SAS or U.3 NVMe SSDs, and 96TB as 4 x 24TB LFF hard drives. The option list also includes 26TB LFF SAS and SATA hard drives.
Does the DL325 Gen12 support NVMe drives?
Yes, in two form factors: SFF U.3 NVMe SSDs on the Basic Carrier and EDSFF E3.S 1T NVMe SSDs in the EC1 carrier. NVMe bays connect either by direct-attach cable kits to the processor or through an OCP, PCIe or MR932i-p controller.
What carrier do DL325 Gen12 drives use?
SFF drives use the Basic Carrier (BC), LFF drives the Low Profile carrier (LP) and E3.S drives the EC1 EDSFF carrier. HPE's part names carry the carrier - BC, LP or LPC, and E3S EC1 - so the name tells you which bay a drive fits.
Can I mix SFF and E3.S drives in one DL325 Gen12?
Yes, on the SFF/EDSFF chassis. HPE states that mixing SFF and EDSFF backplanes is supported there, using 2SFF and 4EDSFF stacking backplane kits across the five front boxes.
Which DL325 Gen12 drives are encrypted?
HPE lists self-encrypting SATA SSDs, FIPS 140-3 SAS and NVMe SSDs in both SFF and E3.S, a 960GB SED NS204i-u boot device, and FIPS 140-2 TAA-compliant SFF 10K hard drives. They are separate part numbers from the standard drives.
