HPE ProLiant DL120 Gen9 Power Supplies
Genuine HPE power hardware for the HPE ProLiant DL120 Gen9, new and refurbished. Redundancy is not two supplies in two bays on this server. It is a redundant power supply backplane carrying up to two AC power input modules, and HPE documents the backplane as mandatory with any redundant module — so a second module on its own will not make a single-supply machine redundant.
DL120 Gen9 Power Supply Specifications
- Redundant architecture: an RPS power backplane plus AC power input modules; the backplane is mandatory with the module, and each backplane supports up to two modules
- Redundant module: the AC 240VDC power input module, 80 Plus Gold at up to 92% efficiency on a standard C14 inlet, taking 100 to 240V AC and 240V DC; the module listed here is rated 800W Gold in a redundant pair and 900W standing alone
- Non-redundant alternative: the 550W power supply, 80 Plus Silver at up to 89%, shipped on entry models
- Failover behaviour: redundant AC power input modules do not share power — module 1 is the primary and module 2 is the backup
- Mixing: not supported. All power supplies must share input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating, or HPE warns of errors and operational issues
- Input and heat: 100 to 240 VAC at 47 to 63 Hz; with the 550W supply, rated input power stays under 670W and the maximum is 2201 BTU/hr at 100 VAC
- Cooling: three hot-swap fans as standard, five with fan redundancy, which is not supported behind processors above 105W
A second power supply on its own will not make this server redundant. Redundancy here is an RPS backplane carrying up to two AC power input modules, and HPE documents the backplane as mandatory with the module. The modules do not share load either — module 1 is primary, module 2 is backup — so size one module against the whole build.
Do You Need the Backplane as Well as the Module?
| Non-redundant | Redundant | |
|---|---|---|
| Supply | 550W power supply | AC 240VDC power input module |
| Efficiency | 80 Plus Silver, up to 89% | 80 Plus Gold, up to 92% |
| Backplane | Not used | Required |
| Modules fitted | One | Up to two per backplane |
| Load sharing | Not applicable | None: module 1 primary, module 2 backup |
Usually yes, and it catches people out. A DL120 Gen9 running a single 550W supply cannot be made redundant by adding a second one, because redundancy here means the backplane and the modules that mount on it. Where the backplane is already fitted, a matching second module finishes the job. And because the modules do not share load, a redundant pair is failover rather than extra headroom — size one module against the whole configuration.
Choosing the Right DL120 Gen9 Power Supply
- Read the label on the installed unit first. Input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating all have to match, so the fitted supply is the specification.
- Redundancy needs the backplane, not just a second module. HPE documents the RPS backplane as mandatory with the redundant power input module.
- Size against one module, not two. The pair does not share load, so the primary module alone has to carry the build.
- Fan redundancy stops at 105W. HPE does not support redundant fans behind processors above that, so a high-wattage CPU and a fully redundant chassis are not the same machine.
- Size to the configuration, not the maximum. Four LFF drives behind a 55W processor is a very different draw from eight SFF drives behind a 145W part, and HPE publishes a Power Advisor for sizing it.

DL120 Gen9 Power Supplies FAQ
Can I mix power supplies in a DL120 Gen9?
No. HPE states that all power supplies must share input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating. Non-matching supplies can produce an error message or operational issues.
Do I need a power backplane to make a DL120 Gen9 redundant?
Yes. The redundant AC power input module is mandatorily paired with an RPS power backplane, and each backplane supports up to two modules.
Do the two power modules share the load?
No. HPE documents that the modules do not share power: module 1 is the primary and module 2 the backup, so the pair gives failover rather than extra capacity.
How efficient are the DL120 Gen9 power supplies?
The AC 240VDC power input module is 80 Plus Gold certified at up to 92 percent. The non-redundant 550W supply is 80 Plus Silver at up to 89 percent.
What input voltage does the DL120 Gen9 accept?
A rated line voltage of 100 to 240 VAC at 47 to 63 Hz, on a standard C14 inlet. The AC 240VDC module also supports 240V DC.
How many fans does a DL120 Gen9 have?
Three hot-swap fans non-redundant and five when fan redundancy is fitted. HPE does not support fan redundancy behind processors above 105W.
