Each node has its own processors, memory, drives and operating system; what the nodes share is the chassis, its power and its cooling. The design buys density — more servers per rack unit than the same count of individual 1U machines — and the price is that some parts belong to the node and some to the chassis. What Defines a Multi-node Server

• The nodes are the servers: a fault inside one node does not touch the others, but a chassis-level power or cooling failure touches every node in that chassis. That trade is the whole design.
• Drive bays belong to a node: the front bays are divided between the nodes, so which bay a drive sits in decides which server sees it. Check the mapping for your chassis before moving a drive between bays.
• Parts split two ways: node parts are processors, memory, drives, storage controllers and low-profile cards; chassis parts are power supplies, fans and backplanes. Knowing which you are buying saves ordering the right part for the wrong half of the machine.
• The nodes are not interchangeable: the two G6 nodes in this family list different parts. The DL170e G6 listing carries power supplies and rack options of its own; the DL170h G6 listing does not.
• The numbering looks like a rack server and is not one: a DL170h G6 is not a small DL180 G6, and parts do not cross between them despite the shared DL prefix.
• Expansion is low-profile: a half-width node has room for a small number of low-profile cards, so networking and storage controller choices are narrower than in a full 1U or 2U chassis.
