HPE ProLiant BL465c G7 Hard Drives

Genuine HPE hot-plug drives for the HPE ProLiant BL465c G7, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. A half-height blade carries two small form factor bays and no more, and HPE does not support mixing SAS, SATA and solid state drives within one server — so both bays take the same kind of drive.

BL465c G7 Drive Specifications

  • Bays: two hot-plug 2.5-inch small form factor bays for SAS, SATA or solid state drives; no drives ship standard
  • Mixing: not supported — SAS, SATA and SSD drives cannot be combined in the same server blade
  • Maximum internal capacity: 2TB on two 1TB SAS or two 1TB SATA drives, 1.6TB on two 800GB SAS SSDs, or 800GB on two 400GB SATA SSDs
  • Controller: the embedded HPE Smart Array P410i with 1GB flash backed write cache, supporting RAID 0 and 1
  • Hard drive families: 6G SAS enterprise at 10K and 15K rpm from 146GB to 900GB, plus 6G SAS and 3G SATA midline at 7.2K in 500GB and 1TB
  • Solid state: earlier-generation parts — 6G SAS SLC and mainstream endurance to 800GB, and 3G SATA MLC in 100GB, 200GB and 400GB

Two bays, and both must carry the same kind of drive. HPE does not support mixing SAS, SATA and solid state drives within one BL465c G7, and with only two bays that single rule decides the whole configuration. The embedded Smart Array P410i runs RAID 0 and 1, so a mirror is the redundant option and it halves the usable capacity.

What Will Two Bays Actually Hold?

Two bays and a controller that does RAID 0 and 1 leave exactly two useful arrays: a mirror, which halves the total, or a stripe, which does not survive a drive failure. Past about a terabyte of protected local storage the answer stops being internal — it is an expansion blade, or external SAS storage behind a mezzanine controller.

Choosing the Right BL465c G7 Hard Drive

  • Buy the two drives together, and buy them the same. One SAS drive and one SATA drive is not a supported pair, even when both are 1TB.
  • Size for the mirror, not the total. Two 1TB drives give 2TB raw and 1TB usable once mirrored, which is the configuration most of these blades actually run.
  • Match the whole storage path. HPE notes that the drive, controller, firmware and backplane should run at the same transfer rate, or the system negotiates down to the slowest.
  • Enterprise SAS for duty cycle, midline for capacity. The 10K and 15K drives carry the higher spindle speeds; the 7.2K midline drives are where the terabytes are.
  • Treat the SSDs as boot and cache parts. These are 6G SAS and 3G SATA drives of an earlier generation, with capacities to match.

The two bays are wired to the embedded P410i, and reaching storage outside the blade means a mezzanine card — see BL465c G7 storage controllers. BL465c G7 Hard Drives FAQ

How many hard drives does a BL465c G7 hold?
Two. The blade has two hot-plug small form factor bays, and no drives ship standard in them.

Can I mix a SAS drive and a SATA drive in a BL465c G7?
No. HPE states that SAS, SATA and solid state drives cannot be mixed within the server, so both bays must carry the same kind of drive.

What is the maximum internal storage of a BL465c G7?
2TB, on two 1TB SAS or two 1TB SATA drives. Solid state configurations reach 1.6TB on two 800GB SAS SSDs, or 800GB on two 400GB SATA SSDs.

What RAID levels can the two bays run?
RAID 0 and 1. The embedded Smart Array P410i supports those two levels on this blade, so the practical choice is a mirror or a stripe.

Do I need HPE drive carriers?
Yes. Drives fit the bays in HPE hot-plug carriers, and the carrier is part of the drive assembly rather than a separate accessory.

Will a 6G drive run at full speed in this blade?
Only if the rest of the path does. HPE notes that the drive, controller, firmware and backplane negotiate to a common transfer rate, so a 6G drive behind a 3G path runs at the slower speed.
