The embedded controller is not the one you upgrade. The Smart Array P410i with 1GB flash backed write cache is already in the blade and covers both internal bays at RAID 0 and 1. A P700m earns one of the two mezzanine slots only when the storage sits outside the blade — and the BL465c G7 supports a maximum of one array controller battery, so plan the cache protection with it.

The split that matters is inside against outside. The P410i is already fitted and covers both internal bays; the P700m drives SAS storage that sits elsewhere, and it spends a mezzanine slot that a 10 Gigabit or Fibre Channel card may want more. If the aim was RAID 5 on the two internal drives, nothing on this page delivers it.

- Settle where the drives live before choosing a part number. The P700m is an external-port controller and does not take over the internal backplane from the P410i.
- Count your mezzanine slots first. There are two, and networking, Fibre Channel, InfiniBand and I/O Accelerator options all compete for them.
- Cache size is the difference between the two stocked P700m parts. 256MB and 512MB are otherwise the same four-port x8 card.
- One battery, one blade. Fitting a battery-backed controller has implications for the P410i's own cache capacitor, so plan the two together.
- An expansion blade is the other answer. The BL465c G7 supports one storage, tape or PCI expansion blade.
