HPE ProLiant BL460c G7 Parts

The HPE ProLiant BL460c G7 is a half-height c-Class server blade built on the Intel 5520 chipset, taking up to two Xeon 5600 series processors across twelve DDR3 DIMM slots and two small form factor drive bays. It is not a standalone machine: it plugs into an HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000 enclosure, which supplies its power, its cooling and the interconnect bays its network ports land in. Every part below is genuine HPE, available new and refurbished, and tested for compatibility before it ships. Live pricing for each part number appears in the tables further down this page.

BL460c G7 Platform at a Glance

  • Form factor: half-height c-Class server blade, 16.5 lb with every drive and processor fitted — it has no power supplies, fans or rails of its own
  • Enclosure: up to sixteen of these blades in the 10U HPE BladeSystem c7000, or up to eight in the 6U HPE BladeSystem c3000
  • Processors: up to two Intel Xeon 5600 series, four or six cores each, with 8MB or 12MB of shared L3 cache depending on model
  • Memory: twelve DDR3 slots — six per processor, three channels at two DIMMs per channel — taking Registered or Unbuffered DIMMs to 384GB registered or 48GB unbuffered
  • Drive bays: two hot-plug 2.5-inch SFF bays taking SAS, SATA or solid state drives, to 2.0TB on two 1TB drives; the three drive types cannot be mixed in one blade
  • Storage controller: embedded HPE Smart Array P410i with no cache as standard, supporting RAID 0 and RAID 1, with 256MB, 512MB and 1GB cache modules listed as upgrades
  • Networking: integrated HPE NC553i dual-port FlexFabric 10Gb adapter with FCoE, Flex-10 and Accelerated iSCSI, each port autosensing 1Gb or 10Gb, plus a separate 10/100 adapter for iLO 3
  • Expansion: two x8 PCI Express I/O mezzanine slots, taking Ethernet, Fibre Channel, InfiniBand, I/O accelerator or Smart Array SAS mezzanine cards
  • Management: embedded HPE iLO 3 with 128MB of ECC DDR, plus an internal USB 2.0 connector, an internal SD card slot and a TPM 1.2 connector
  • Also listed below: Gigabit and 10Gb Ethernet mezzanines, 4Gb and 8Gb Fibre Channel mezzanines, InfiniBand mezzanine HCAs, IO Accelerators, the SB40c storage blade, the PCI expansion blade and LTO-3 and LTO-4 tape blades

Two numbers decide most BL460c G7 orders: two drive bays and twelve DIMM slots. Both bays have to carry the same kind of drive — SAS, SATA and solid state cannot be mixed in one blade — and only six of the twelve memory slots are available until a second processor is fitted. Everything else on this blade, power and cooling included, comes from the c7000 or c3000 enclosure it plugs into.

Specifications on this page are taken from the HPE QuickSpecs for this server blade, HPE ProLiant BL460c Generation 7 (G7) Server Blade QuickSpecs, Version 28.

BL460c G7 Parts FAQ

What enclosure does the BL460c G7 need?
An HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000. A 10U c7000 holds up to sixteen of these half-height blades and a 6U c3000 holds up to eight. The blade has no power supplies, fans or rails of its own - the enclosure supplies power, cooling and the interconnect bays its ports land in.

What processors does the BL460c G7 support?
Up to two Intel Xeon 5600 series processors on the Intel 5520 chipset, in four-core and six-core models with 8MB or 12MB of shared L3 cache. The blade ships with one processor fitted and is upgradeable to two.

How much memory can a BL460c G7 take?
384GB using twelve 32GB quad-rank Registered DIMMs, or 48GB using twelve 4GB Unbuffered DIMMs. The two types cannot be mixed, and with only one processor installed just six of the twelve slots are available.

How many hard drives fit in a BL460c G7?
Two. The blade has two hot-plug 2.5-inch small form factor bays, reaching 2.0TB on two 1TB SAS or SATA drives. SAS, SATA and solid state drives cannot be mixed within the blade.

Does the BL460c G7 have onboard networking?
Yes. An integrated NC553i dual-port FlexFabric 10Gb adapter, with each port autosensing 1Gb or 10Gb and both ports running at the same speed. FCoE needs an HPE Virtual Connect FlexFabric module or a 10GbE Pass-Thru module in the enclosure.

Can I put a standard PCIe card in a BL460c G7?
No. Expansion is two x8 PCI Express mezzanine slots taking c-Class mezzanine cards - Ethernet, Fibre Channel, InfiniBand, I/O accelerator or Smart Array SAS. A separate PCI expansion blade is listed for cards that need a conventional slot.
