HPE ProLiant WS460c Gen8 Memory
Genuine HPE SmartMemory DDR3 for the HPE ProLiant WS460c Gen8, new and refurbished. The blade carries 16 DIMM slots — eight per processor, four channels at two DIMMs per channel — and the decision that shapes every upgrade is which of the three DDR3 technologies is already in it, because Registered, Unbuffered and Load Reduced modules cannot be mixed in one server.
WS460c Gen8 Memory Specifications
- Type: HPE SmartMemory DDR3 Registered (RDIMM), Unbuffered ECC (UDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM), in PC3-14900, PC3-12800 and PC3L-10600 low voltage kits
- Slots: 16 in total, eight per processor across four channels; with only one processor installed, half the slots are unavailable
- Maximum load reduced: 512GB on sixteen 32GB quad-rank modules, at 1333MHz and 1.35V on PC3L-10600L parts or 1866MHz on PC3-14900L
- Maximum registered: 384GB on sixteen 24GB three-rank PC3L-10600R modules at 1333MHz; sixteen 16GB dual-rank modules reach 256GB at up to 1600MHz
- Maximum unbuffered: 128GB on sixteen 8GB dual-rank UDIMMs at up to 1866MHz
- Protection modes: Advanced ECC, Memory Online Spare (rank spare) and Lockstep
The 384GB registered ceiling is an all-or-nothing configuration. HPE requires the 24GB kits to fill every available slot — sixteen on most processors, twelve where an E5-2690, E5-2643, E5-2637 v2, E5-2643 v2 or E5-2667 v2 has closed slots 4 and 5 — and the internal USB 2.0 port is unavailable while they are fitted.
Which DDR3 technology should you fit?
| Registered (RDIMM) | Unbuffered (UDIMM) | Load Reduced (LRDIMM) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | 384GB | 128GB | 512GB |
| Kit sizes stocked | 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 24GB | 2GB, 4GB, 8GB | 32GB |
| Largest module | 24GB three rank PC3L-10600R | 8GB dual rank PC3-14900E | 32GB quad rank PC3-14900L |
| Mixing with another type | Not supported | Not supported | Not supported |
Registered is the default and the safe answer for most blades, but the 384GB figure carries a condition: HPE requires the 24GB kits to fill every available slot, sixteen on most processors and twelve on the five models that close slots 4 and 5, and the internal USB 2.0 port is unavailable while they are fitted. Load Reduced is the only route past 384GB, and converting means replacing every module in the blade.
Choosing the Right WS460c Gen8 Memory
- Check what is fitted before ordering a single kit. RDIMM, UDIMM and LRDIMM are distinct technologies and cannot be mixed, so a wrong module means the blade will not post rather than simply running slower.
- The processor family decides which SmartMemory you can use. HPE states that E5-2600 v2 processors can only be configured with 1866MHz SmartMemory or 1600MHz low voltage parts, and that E5-2600 series processors cannot use either.
- Five processor models cost you slots. With an E5-2690, E5-2643, E5-2643 v2, E5-2637 v2 or E5-2667 v2 installed, DIMM slots 4 and 5 are inaccessible, leaving twelve usable slots in a two-processor blade.
- Mixed voltages and speeds level down. RDIMMs rated 1.35V and 1.5V may be mixed, and the blade powers all of them at the higher voltage; mixed speeds settle on a common optimal speed.
- Every HPE DDR3 kit here is a single DIMM. A 256GB upgrade is sixteen 16GB kits, not one boxed set.
Complete Your WS460c Gen8 Build
Memory speed and voltage are set by the processor as much as by the module — see the WS460c Gen8 processors before deciding on clock, and note that a second processor is what opens the other eight slots. WS460c Gen8 Memory FAQ
What is the maximum memory in a WS460c Gen8?
512GB, reached with sixteen 32GB quad-rank Load Reduced DIMMs in a two-processor blade. Registered DIMMs reach 384GB with sixteen 24GB modules, and Unbuffered DIMMs reach 128GB.
Can I mix RDIMM, UDIMM and LRDIMM in a WS460c Gen8?
No. HPE treats the three as distinct memory technologies that cannot be mixed within a server. Whichever is fitted today is what any upgrade must match, and converting means replacing every module.
How many memory slots does the WS460c Gen8 have?
Sixteen, arranged as eight per processor across four channels with two DIMMs per channel. With one processor installed, only eight are usable.
Are there conditions on using the 24GB memory kits?
Yes, two. Every available slot must be filled with them - sixteen on most processors, or twelve where an E5-2690, E5-2643, E5-2637 v2, E5-2643 v2 or E5-2667 v2 has closed slots 4 and 5. The internal USB 2.0 port is also unavailable while those kits are installed.
Why does my WS460c Gen8 memory run slower than its rating?
The processor decides. E5-2680, E5-2670, E5-2667, E5-2665, E5-2660, E5-2650, E5-2650L and E5-2637 blades support 1600, 1333 and 1066MHz; E5-2640, E5-2630, E5-2630L and E5-2620 support 1333 and 1066MHz; E5-2609 and E5-2603 run at 1066MHz only.
Can I use memory from a WS460c G6 blade?
No. HPE states that memory from previous generation servers is not qualified or warranted with this blade, and that SmartMemory is required to realise the performance listed for Gen8.
