The two bays on the node are not the same as the sixty in the chassis. The main storage section takes any mix of SAS, SATA and SATA solid state behind the Smart Array P420i, reaching 240.0TB on sixty 4TB drives. The two SFF bays on each node run off the B110i SATA RAID controller, and HPE documents those with SATA drives only.

Bays trade against nodes, and the chassis in front of you has already made the trade. The 1x60 puts every bay behind a single server; the 3x15 splits fewer bays across three. What matters when you order is the per-node figure rather than the chassis total, because an array cannot span nodes — 15 bays is the ceiling for one server in a 3x15.
Choosing the Right SL4545 G7 Hard Drive
- The two bays on the node are SATA. They hang off the B110i SATA RAID controller, and HPE documents them only with SATA drives and SSDs.
- Match the whole storage path. HPE notes the drive, the controller, firmware and backplane should all run at the same transfer rate, or bandwidth negotiates down to the slowest.
- SAS for spindle speed, midline for bulk. The 15K enterprise LFF drives here are 450GB and 600GB; capacity comes from the 7.2K midline families, to 4TB in SAS and SATA.
- Solid state on this platform is SATA. The LFF Value Endurance range covers 240GB to 800GB and the SFF Mainstream Endurance range 100GB to 800GB; neither is a SAS SSD.
- Drives seat in HPE SmartDrive carriers. The carrier is part of the drive assembly and matched to the bay, so an SFF drive will not go into an LFF bay.
