HPE ProLiant SL390s G7 Hard Drives
Genuine HPE hard drives and solid state drives for the HPE ProLiant SL390s G7, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. Which tray you own decides everything here: the 1U takes two 3.5-inch or four 2.5-inch drives on quick release carriers, the 2U takes four hot-plug 2.5-inch drives plus two internal quick release, and the 4U takes eight hot-plug 2.5-inch drives.
SL390s G7 Drive Specifications
- 1U half-width tray: up to two 3.5-inch LFF or four 2.5-inch SFF non-hot-plug drives, all on quick release carriers
- 2U half-width tray: up to four hot-plug 2.5-inch drives in the front bays, plus up to two internal 2.5-inch quick release drives
- 4U half-width tray: up to eight hot-plug 2.5-inch drives
- Maximum internal capacity: 4.0TB in the 1U tray on two 2TB quick release LFF drives, 3.6TB in the 2U on four 900GB hot-plug SAS, and 4.0TB in the 4U on eight 500GB hot-plug drives
- Interface: 6G SAS and 3G SATA — but the embedded Smart Array B110i is SATA only, so SAS drives need an add-in Smart Array controller
- Enablement kits: an SFF enablement kit for every two SFF drives added to the 1U tray, a 2U SAS enablement kit to run SAS instead of SATA in the 2U, and a SATA cable kit for the 2U tray's internal non-hot-plug drives
Check the carrier before the capacity. Every part number listed individually here is a quick release, non-hot-plug drive, which is what the 1U tray and the 2U tray's two internal bays take. The hot-plug front bays in the 2U and 4U take hot-plug carriers instead, the two do not swap, and 3.5-inch drives fit the 1U tray only.
Which Drives Fit Your SL390s G7 Tray?
| Tray | Bays | Carrier | Maximum capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1U half width | two 3.5-inch or four 2.5-inch | Quick release, non-hot-plug | 4.0TB on two 2TB LFF |
| 2U half width | four front, plus two internal | Hot-plug front, quick release internal | 3.6TB on four 900GB SAS |
| 4U half width | eight front | Hot-plug | 4.0TB on eight 500GB |
Read the carrier before you read the capacity. Every part number listed individually on this page is a quick release drive, which is what the 1U tray and the 2U tray's two internal bays take; the hot-plug front bays in the 2U and 4U take standard hot-plug 2.5-inch drives from the shared SAS and SATA families further down. The two carriers are not interchangeable, and 3.5-inch drives fit the 1U tray only.
Choosing the Right SL390s G7 Hard Drive
- Identify the tray, then the carrier, then the capacity. A quick release drive will not seat in a hot-plug bay and a hot-plug drive will not seat in a quick release one, whatever the size on the label.
- SAS costs you the expansion slot. The embedded B110i runs SATA at 3.0 Gb/s only, so SAS means a Smart Array card in the tray's single low-profile slot, plus the matching cable or enablement kit.
- Four solid state drives per controller. HPE recommends a maximum of four SSDs on any one Smart Array controller for best performance, and a second controller for a second set of four.
- Adding SFF drives to a 1U tray needs a kit. HPE specifies an SFF enablement kit for every two SFF drives added, which is not included with the drive.
- Match the whole storage path. HPE notes that the drive, the controller, the firmware and the backplane should all run at the same transfer rate, or the system negotiates down to the slowest of them.

SL390s G7 Hard Drives FAQ
How many hard drives does an SL390s G7 hold?
It depends on the tray. The 1U holds two 3.5-inch or four 2.5-inch quick release drives, the 2U holds four hot-plug 2.5-inch drives plus two internal quick release, and the 4U holds eight hot-plug 2.5-inch drives.
What is a quick release carrier?
It is the non-hot-plug carrier HPE uses for drives in the 1U tray and for the two internal bays of the 2U tray. It is not the same as a hot-plug carrier, and the two do not swap between bays.
Can I fit 3.5-inch drives in an SL390s G7?
Only in the 1U half-width tray, which takes up to two of them on quick release carriers. The 2U and 4U trays are 2.5-inch only.
Do I need a controller for SAS drives in an SL390s G7?
Yes. The embedded Smart Array B110i handles SATA at 3.0 Gb/s only, so SAS drives require an add-in Smart Array controller plus the cable or enablement kit that matches your tray.
What is the maximum internal storage in an SL390s G7?
4.0TB in the 1U tray on two 2TB quick release LFF drives, 3.6TB in the 2U on four 900GB hot-plug SAS drives, and 4.0TB in the 4U on eight 500GB hot-plug drives.
How many SSDs should I put on one controller?
Four. HPE recommends a maximum of four solid state drives per Smart Array controller on this platform, and suggests a second controller if you want a second set of four.
