The 1200W units are the trap on this platform. Both of them deliver their full 1200W only from 200V upward; on a 120V feed they are 900W supplies and on 100V they are 800W supplies, which is less headroom than a chassis sized on the nameplate expects. The 750W units hold 750W across the whole 100 to 240V range. Efficiency grade also counts for more here than on a single server, because one set of supplies carries four trays for years rather than one.

Choosing the Right SL165s G7 Power Supply

  • Size for the chassis, not for the tray. Every node in the s6500 draws from these supplies, so the sum of the trays is the number that matters. HPE publishes a Power Advisor for working it out.
  • Check the rack feed before buying 1200W. At 100V or 120V a 1200W Common Slot unit gives 800W or 900W, so the high-line feed is part of the specification rather than a detail.
  • Read the label on what is already fitted. The installed supply tells you the output and efficiency grade the chassis was built around, which is the quickest route to a correct order.
  • A switched PDU is not a way to power one tray down. Cutting AC to the chassis supplies takes down every server in that chassis, because the nodes share them. HPE's SL Advanced Power Manager exists precisely to switch a single node instead.
  • Fans are a separate chassis decision. All eight s6500 fan bays must be populated, the kits contain one fan each, and redundant and non-redundant fans cannot be mixed.
