Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant ML350e Gen8, new and refurbished. This is the Xeon E5-2400 tower of the ML350 Gen8 line, not the E5-2600 ML350p — two sockets on the Intel C600 chipset, three memory channels per socket, and eight, twelve or sixteen cores in total.

A second processor does more than double the cores. It brings the second bank of six DIMM slots into use and activates PCIe slots 3 and 4, which are inactive with one CPU fitted. It must be the same model as the first — HPE does not support mixing processor models in one server.

Core count on this platform comes bundled with cache and with memory clock, which makes the comparison less obvious than it looks. The six-core E5-2440 clocks higher than the eight-core E5-2450, at 2.4GHz against 2.1GHz, but carries 5MB less cache and holds the memory a step slower at 1333MHz. The one genuinely low-power part is the 60W six-core E5-2430L, which gives up 0.4GHz against the E5-2440 for a 35W saving per socket.
Choosing the Right ML350e Gen8 Processor
- A second processor must match the first. HPE does not support mixing processor models, so going to two CPUs means two of the same kit unless the existing one is being replaced.
- The second processor unlocks more than cores. It brings the second bank of six DIMM slots into play and activates PCIe slots 3 and 4, which are otherwise inactive.
- Buy memory to the processor class. Eight-core parts hold 1600MHz, six-core parts 1333MHz and quad-core parts 1066MHz, so faster modules than the CPU supports are wasted.
- Three channels per socket, not four. The E5-2400 series populates three channels per processor across six DIMM slots, so memory kits are best bought in threes per CPU.
- Check power and cooling against the wattage. Two 95W parts in a tower that ships with one 460W non-hot-plug supply and two non-hot-plug fans is the configuration that pushes an order towards the 750W supply and the enablement kit.
